Rest areas remain open to support truckers throughout Wisconsin

MADISON -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is keeping its 28 rest areas under normal operation to support truckers during a critical time for moving supplies.WisDOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson issued the following statement in a news release:

MCTS reducing weekday bus service in response to coronavirus spread

MILWAUKEE — As part of its ongoing response to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is reducing the amount of bus service offered on weekdays.As an increasing number of businesses have closed or allowed employees to work from home, MCTS is seeing a significant decrease in ridership.

Air traffic control tower temporarily closed at Chicago Midway International Airport

CHICAGO -- The air traffic control tower at Chicago Midway International Airport is temporarily closing, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).Officials say on Tuesday, March 17, several technicians at the facility tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.An FAA statement says the airport remains open and operations will continue at a reduced rate until the situation is resolved.The statement goes on to say the following:

Coronavirus travel bans, restrictions creating turbulance for airlines

MILWAUKEE -- As new travel bans and restrictions are being put in place nearly daily, that is creating stress for passengers who are wanting to cancel flights.Michael Sherwood came to the Milwaukee airport to cancel a flight to Las Vegas -- in person."Everything's closing in Las Vegas, restaurants, casinos," Sherwood said.

US airlines seek billions in aid as outbreak cripples travel

ATLANTA -- U.S. airlines are asking the federal government for grants, loans and tax relief that could easily top $50 billion to help them recover from a sharp downturn in travel due to the new coronavirus.Airlines for America, the trade group representing the carriers, disclosed its request for financial help on Monday, just as more airlines around the world were announcing ever-deeper cuts in service and, in some cases, layoffs.The trade group is asking for $29 billion in federal grants, with $25 billion for passenger airlines and $4 billion for cargo carriers.

MCTS taking added steps to clean buses in response to coronavirus outbreak

MILWAUKEE -- Although the COVID-19 coronavirus has not become widespread in Milwaukee County, the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) has ramped-up its disinfection process for all buses.MCTS has added an extra daily disinfection process for the entire fleet -- in addition to the standard, regular cleaning of vehicles.

Single-engine airplane crashes, flips over at Rhinelander airport

RHINELANDER, Wis. — Authorities say one person has been injured in the crash of a single-engine plane at the Rhinelander airport, WSAW reports.The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says the single-engine Cessna 208 Caravan crashed, flipped over and came to rest between a taxiway and a runway Thursday morning.WJFW-TV reports airport director Matthew Leitner says the plane belongs to CSA Air in Michigan.

TSA finds loaded handgun in woman's carry-on bag at Mitchell Intl. Airport

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee woman was stopped by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport on Thursday, Feb. 13, when they detected a purple 9 mm caliber handgun loaded with 10 bullets including one in the chamber, in her carry-on bag.

Semi jackknifes on I-43 at North Avenue, slows morning commute for thousands

MILWAUKEE -- The left lanes were closed for several hours on I-43 in both directions at North Avenue in Milwaukee Thursday morning, Feb. 13 due to a jackknifed semi.The truck was headed northbound around 3:40 a.m. But in the wreck, the cab of the truck ended up straddling the median barriers -- and forcing authorities to shut down a portion of the southbound lanes.PHOTO GALLERYThe Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said there were no injuries, and the driver of the semi was cited for driving to fast for conditions and failure to have control.The Milwaukee Fire Department's hazmat team was called in to contain and clean up 100 gallons of spilled fuel from the semi.

New app helps MCTS riders who are blind, low vision navigate 5K+ bus stops in Milwaukee County

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele, the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) and the Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities (OPD) announced on Wednesday, Feb. 5 the launch of a pilot program that supports MCTS riders who are blind or low vision with increased access to public transportation.A news release says through Aira, an app available on any iOS or Android smartphone, users can receive free, one-on-one assistance riding the bus and navigating the more than 5,000 bus stops in Milwaukee County.The Aira app is an interactive tool that enables riders with visual disabilities to connect with professionals trained to help read signage, identify obstacles, identify bus stops and offer verbal step-by-step travel directions.
