UW-Madison chancellor can't declare sanctuary
MADISON -- University of Wisconsin-Madison officials say Chancellor Rebecca Blank doesn't have the authority to declare the school a sanctuary for students who entered the country illegally.The Associated Students of Madison passed a resolution Wednesday calling on Blank and UW System President Ray Cross to declare UW-Madison and all system schools sanctuaries for students who entered the country illegally before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.The resolution explains that the declaration would mean the campuses wouldn't work with federal immigration authorities on deportation issues and the schools would bar federal immigration authorities from visiting the campuses to make arrests.UW-Madison spokesman John Lucas said in email Thursday that Blank doesn't have the power to make such a declaration and she must run the school within the constraints of federal and state law.

MILWAUKEE -- Construction on Marquette University's newest residence hall officially got underway Wednesday, November 2nd.A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site near 17th and Wells.The $96 million towers will house 750 freshmen and sophomore students.The facility will feature two 375-bed resident towers connected through the lower levels by dining and campus community space.According to Lora Strigens, vice president for planning and strategy, the new residence halls, which are set to open in time for the 2018-19 academic year, will feature pod- and suite-like settings, as opposed to the traditional model of large buildings with small double rooms.It should be ready by the 2018-2019 school year.Once the new facilities are fully operational, the university will develop a plan to raze McCormick Hall, Strigens said.

MILWAUKEE — Marquette University announced on Friday, October 28th that it plans to construct a seasonal dome over a portion of its Valley Fields facility, enclosing the synthetic turf field adjacent to the stadium.The seasonal dome, which will provide practice and training facilities for intercollegiate athletes as well as club and intramural participants, is expected to be completed in January 2017.Bill Scholl, vice president and director of athletics stated the following in a news release:
