Mosquito batch collected in Mitchell Park in Brookfield tests positive for West Nile Virus

WAUKESHA -- Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use - Division of Environmental Health has been notified by the Wisconsin Division of Health Services that a mosquito batch collected in Mitchell Park in the city of Brookfield has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).This test was conducted as part of the city of Brookfield’s mosquito and WNV surveillance, prevention and control program.

WAUKESHA -- Local residents on a drizzly Saturday (August 29th) noticed their streets filled with police cars, ambulances and Wisconsin National Guard Humvees as nearly 1,000 emergency and military first responders converged on Waukesha, Wisconsin, in a training scenario where the city was devastated by an EF5 tornado.Nearly 700 Wisconsin National Guard troops partnered with the city of Waukesha Police Department, civilian emergency responders and all levels of emergency management to conduct a full-scale disaster exercise held Aug. 28-30 at the Waukesha County Expo Center and at sites throughout the city."The tornado scenario simulated a mass casualty event that would prompt emergency response from all levels of emergency management including the National Guard," Kevin Lahner, Waukesha city administrator, said.Such large-scale exercises are vital to hone the ability of local and state agencies to respond and work together during both natural and manmade disasters in Wisconsin."This exercise here validates all of our planning and preparation," said Brian Satula, Wisconsin Emergency Management administrator. All clear: Car fire forces temporary backup on southbound I-43 near Sunny Slope

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- The right lane of southbound I-43 at Sunny Slope in the New Berlin area was temporarily shut down on Friday morning, August 28th due to a car fire.While emergency crews were dealing with the car fire, one lane remained open to commuters.Both lanes opened to traffic shortly after 6 a.m.

27-year-old man arrested after high-speed pursuit, suspected of DUI, third offense

NEW BERLIN -- New Berlin police say a high-speed pursuit and subsequent "high-risk traffic stop" led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man for DUI.Shortly before 4:00 p.m., police were made aware of a reckless driving complaint on I-43NB near Highway 83 -- near the Town of Mukwonago.Two separate callers reported a vehicle driving erratically and at speeds in excess of 100 miles-per-hour.The vehicle entered the city of New Berlin and was observed by an officer near Moorland Road.The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it failed to stop -- continuing northbound on I-43.A pursuit continued, and the suspect lowered the vehicle's speed to 55 miles-per-hour, but he still wasn't stopping the vehicle.The vehicle finally stopped when several squads were following on I-43 at 124th Street.A "high-risk traffic stop" ensued.Police say a language barrier hindered arrest efforts which were improved with the arrival of the police K-9 officer and a Spanish speaking officer.The suspect was eventually taken into custody without incident.

Snappy dressers: Brookfield police seek up to four suspects in theft of credit cards

BROOKFIELD -- Brookfield police are seeking as many as four suspects in connection with the theft of and fraudulent use of stolen credit cards.According to a crime alert issued by the police department, two suspects "stalked" a female victim -- and eventually stole her wallet from a shopping cart.Officials say those stolen credit cards were later used to purchase seven $1,000 gift cards.

Deputy's gun goes off, wounds man during struggle at Juvenile Center

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- A Waukesha County Sheriff's Deputy's gun went off in a struggle with a man at the Waukesha County Juvenile Center on Monday afternoon, August 17th.Officials say just before 3 p.m., the deputy assigned to the juvenile center was involved in a struggle with a 34-year-old man from Hartland who was there for a court hearing.Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson  says the man attempted to disarm the deputy.

42-year-old bicyclist taken to the hospital after she was hit by a vehicle in Waukesha

WAUKESHA  -- Waukesha police say a 42-year-old female bicyclist had to be taken to the hospital by Flight for Life after she was struck by a vehicle on Thursday afternoon, August 13th.It happened just after noon on State Highway 59.Police say a 74-year-old man driving a vehicle was making a left turn from westbound State Highway 59 to go south on Center Road, when he apparently failed to see the bicyclist, who was headed eastbound on State Highway 59.The bicyclist ran into the trailer the driver was pulling.Police say the bicyclist suffered a head injury with substantial bleeding.

Aircraft suffering mechanical issues slides off runway at Crites Field, pilot uninjured

WAUKESHA -- Waukesha County Sheriff's officials say an aircraft had to return to Crites Field shortly after takeoff Monday, August 10th due to mechanical problems.Officials were called out to Crites Field shortly before 7:00 p.m. -- for a report of an airplane that had slid off the runway.It was determined that the aircraft had taken off from Crites Field, but had returned after experiencing mechanical problems.The aircraft landed safely, but struck a landing light at the end of the runway.

Adult or juvenile court? Decision from judge on Morgan Geyser, Anissa Weier expected Monday

WAUKESHA COUNTY -- 13-year-old Morgan Geyser and 13-year-old Anissa Weier, each facing one felony count of first degree intentional homicide will be in court in Waukesha County on Monday, August 10th -- where a judge will decide whether the girls will be moved to juvenile court, or whether they'll remain charged as adults.Geyser and Weier are accused of stabbing their friend multiple times on May 31st, 2014 -- and leaving her for dead in the woods in Waukesha.
