MILWAUKEE -- History will be made on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Thursday, February 11th, as UWM plays host to a presidential debate for the very first time.The Democratic National Committee (DNC)-sanctioned debate will be held in the Helen Bader Concert Hall in the Helene Zelazo Center for Performing Arts.NewsHour co-anchors and managing editors Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff will moderate the PBS NewsHour Democratic Primary Debate, to be broadcast nationwide by PBS and WETA Washington, D.C., the flagship public television station in the nation’s capital.In addition to the national live broadcast on PBS, the debate — produced in cooperation with Milwaukee Public Television and WUWM 89.7 FM — will be streamed online at pbs.org/newshour .The debate will begin at 8:00 p.m.

"Jim: The James Foley Story" debuts on HBO: MU professor featured in the film speaks out

MILWAUKEE -- A documentary chronicling the live of Marquette University alumnus James Foley debuted this weekend on HBO.While working as a freelance war correspondent during the Syrian Civil War, Foley was abducted on November 22nd, 2012 in northwestern Syria.He was beheaded in August 2014 -- purportedly as a response to American airstrikes in Iraq, thus becoming the first American citizen killed by the Islamic State of Iraq (ISIS).Foley's close childhood friends are now making a new documentary called "Jim: The James Foley Story."Marquette University's own Thomas Durkin was featured in the film about his friend, and said it is a portrayal of a man with great achievements and heart."I agree with Brian Oakes, who directed it.

Former French Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira receives honorary degree from UWM

MILWAUKEE -- Former French Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira has accepted an honorary degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.Taubira was honored for her work in law and human rights.The former economics professor served as France’s justice minister from 2012 until Wednesday, January 27th, when she resigned in protest of a proposed anti-terrorism law.

Marquette digs in after losing big lead, beats Stetson 74-60

MILWAUKEE — Jajuan Johnson tied a career high with 22 points on Wednesday night and Marquette lost most of its 26-point halftime lead but held on for a 74-60 nonconference win over Stetson.Stetson had a 19-2 run in the first 5:13 of the second half, erasing 17 from the 47-21 halftime margin and making it 49-40 on Luke Doyle's 3-pointer.
