MPS: Malcolm X site set to become the home of Rufus King International Middle School

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- At its October meeting, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors received an update on the plan to bring a high-performing school to the Malcolm X site, approved the final 2014-15 budget including yearly fall amendments and approved a plan for a new charter school in the city.As discussed at the meeting, beginning in fall 2016, Malcolm X is set to be the home of MPS' Rufus King International Middle School, which offers the rigorous college preparatory International Baccalaureate programming found in MPS' top-ranked Rufus King and Ronald Reagan high schools.The Malcolm X facility is undergoing renovation and redesign, creating room to possibly expand the school to serve more families along with a full-size gym, large auditorium, more art and music opportunities, opportunities for more foreign language offerings and modern science labs.King Middle's existing site is in a former elementary school building.

MPS launches new website with improved search abilities

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Students, educators, families and community members looking for information about Milwaukee Public Schools have an easier way to find it thanks to a new and improved tool at their fingertips: the district's new website officially launched this week.The new site serving the district's tens of thousands of students, their families and 160 schools is cleaner, simpler, easier-to-use and includes new features such as grade-specific educational resources and a much-improved search function.

MPS Board approves health care changes: So what does that mean for employees?

MILWAUKEE (WITI) - The Milwaukee Board of School Directors approved a plan Thursday night, September 18th that maintains Milwaukee Public Schools' health care commitment to retirees while saving the district up to $6 million a year.The Board voted to convert current retiree health plans for eligible retirees 65 and older to a Group Medicare Advantage PPO Plan.

7th graders get a behind-the-scenes tour of Mitchell International Airport

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Many 7th graders like Kyra Aguillard have never been in an airport let alone an airplane, but that is no longer the case."I think this is really cool and it's awesome to get to see the pilots and the planes and to actually look inside and get behind the scenes," said Aguillard.The students from Victory School were invited to Mitchell International Airport by Southwest Airlines.They're kicking off the Council of Small Business Executives, or COSBE's "Be the Spark Education Tours.""We believe that the process needs to start with young folks like yourself having the opportunity to see the wide variety of careers that are available," said COSBE Executive Director Mary Steinbrecher.Throughout the school year COSBE will set up 25 MPS schools with tours of 25 businesses to get kids thinking about their future career path and connecting what they're learning in school to various jobs."Today you're going to see all of the inner workings and things that happen behind the scenes and get a chance to see all the things that you're learning in math, and science, and even in your reading classes really apply to the real world," said MPS Acting Superintendent Darienne Driver.Students got to go through security checkpoints, walk on the tarmac, and even go into the cockpit."A lot of buttons and gadgets and seats and there are a lot of buttons," said 7th grader Victor Hudson.Inspiring Aguillard to want to join the airline industry."I think I would try to be a pilot to actually fly.

"Children who are hungry can't concentrate on learning:" MPS to offer free breakfast, lunch to all students

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Public Schools announced Monday, August 18th an amendment to its policy for serving meals to students under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the 2014-2015 school year.The district is now among the first school systems in Wisconsin participating in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP), which means that all students at 156 MPS elementary, middle and high schools will be able to receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at no charge, regardless of family income.MPS is able to participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture program, which is federally funded, because of its high percentage of students who come from low-income households.
