"There are people we need to protect:" MPD holds roll call in the street as school year ends

MILWAUKEE -- The "last student attendance day" for Milwaukee Public Schools students this school year is Monday, June 13th -- and on Thursday, June 9th, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn held a roll call in the street in an effort to make sure the last few days of the school year are safe ones.The roll call was held outside James Madison Academic Campus on Milwaukee's northwest side.Police said there will be community outreach officers around the schools through Monday.

Rexnord makes $1 million donation to Marquette to launch program in business fundamentals

UW community proposes training, dialogue on race

MADISON — Students, faculty and staff at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are proposing everything from mandatory diversity classes to a board game to address issues of race and discrimination on campus.University officials solicited the proposals amid a semester marked by racially charged incidents and an increased push from students for inclusivity.

UW-Wisconsin SAE chapter suspended over racist, bigoted slurs

MADISON — University of Wisconsin administrators have suspended the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter at the school's flagship campus, saying members were found to have repeatedly used racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic slurs and ostracized a black student who tried to stop it.The university's Committee on Student Organizations banned the fraternity from all Greek activities through Nov. 1 and won't allow it to recruit this fall.University documents say a former fraternity member came forward with allegations about the slurs and accused a fraternity member of assaulting him.

Teachers' union, Republican lawmaker issue warnings as Milwaukee School Board considers failing schools plan

MILWAUKEE -- Republicans and union officials are turning up the pressure on the Milwaukee School Board with five weeks to decide whether the district will go along with a turnaround plan for failing city schools.County Executive Chris Abele and his appointed commissioner, Demond Means, have offered the board a proposal that would give Means control of one yet-unnamed school in the 2016-2017 year.
