$87 million MPS referendum voted on, approved for April ballot

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Board of School Directors took a "historic" step toward going to referendum for only the second time in the history of Milwaukee Public Schools, an MPS spokesperson says.The board voted to authorize a referendum question on the April 7 ballot -- a four-year, phase-in revenue limit increase for a total of $87 million -- at it's monthly meeting on Thursday, Dec. 19.That has a tax impact for homeowners of $160 per $100,000 of assessed property value, the spokesperson said.

Police: Threat made by Carmen Schools student determined to be non-credible

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee Public Schools spokeswoman said Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 3 a threat made by a student at Carmen Schools of Science and Technology Northwest near 68th Street and Silver Spring Drive was determined to be non-credible.The spokeswoman said the student was immediately removed from the building, and police were contacted.Police determined there was no safety concern for the school community.The spokeswoman said: "Carmen takes all threats to our students and staff very seriously and are thankful for the support from law enforcement."

MPS to focus on creating healthier menu for students, free of undesirable ingredients

MILWAUKEE -- The meals at Milwaukee Public Schools are going to be changing.The district is partnering with the Life Time Foundation to focus on creating a healthier menu free of seven categories of undesirable ingredients, also known as the Harmful 7.The three-year partnership will work to improve the food available to more than 75,000 students.
