Officials in Chicago suspect heroin laced with fentanyl responsible for 74 overdoses in three days

CHICAGO — Authorities in Chicago say a recent rise in heroin overdoses is continuing to climb.Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says there were 74 non-fatal overdoses between Tuesday night, September 29th and Friday night, October 2nd.The Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/1LpUIIH) reports that some patients turned up at Mount Sinai Hospital with needles still stuck in their arms.City health and fire officials suspect heroin laced with the powerful painkiller fentanyl is to blame for the sudden jump, as it was in 2006.The Drug Enforcement Administration is helping try to determine the source of the drugs.No deaths have been reported from the overdoses, but Mount Sinai emergency room director Diane Hincks says patients have required double and triple doses of the heroin antidote Narcan.Paramedics have been given extra Narcan to carry with them.

Amtrak adding routes to Chicago from Milwaukee for the fall and holiday season

Caught on camera: Clown trespasses into cemetery, gives couple the creeps

CHICAGO -- A couple in Chicago say they were creeped out by what they recently saw in a cemetery, and it wasn't a ghost -- it was a clown!"This was somebody, like putting forth a lot of effort and being really weird," said the woman who recorded the clown on video.The clown was spotted climbing up the 7-foot gate at the cemetery.

A sick joke? Posted signs liken homeless population to rats

CHICAGO -- Signs likening the homeless to rats were spotted on Chicago’s north side.They were tacked to utility poles in the city's Bucktown neighborhood, WGN-TV reports.It was designed to look like city posters warning about areas of rat poisoning.Instead of a picture of a rat, there's a drawing of a homeless person with the headline "Target bums."City crews have been ordered to take down any of the fake signs they see.There is no word on who is responsible for the signs.

CHICAGO (AP) — Paul McCartney, Metallica and Sam Smith will be among 130 acts at this year's Lollapalooza music festival in Chicago.Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell said Florence + the Machine, Bassnectar and The Weeknd are also on the lineup.Farrell says "young talented artists will be performing alongside legends."McCartney will be making his first appearance at Lollapalooza, while Metallica is taking a stage for the first time since 1996.Others performing include Kaskade, Alesso, NERO, Dillon Francis, Carnage, Nicky Romero and DJ Snake.Farrell says the lineup contains "fresh faces," including MisterWives, Ryn Weaver, Catfish and Bottlemen.The festival, taking place July 31 to Aug. 2, marks its 11-year anniversary in Chicago's Grant Park.Festival officials say three-day general admission tickets sold out within an hour.

52-year-old woman in police custody, accused of slicing baby's throat with a circular saw

CHICAGO (WITI) -- A nine-month-old girl was found dead in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood Monday morning, March 9th -- her throat cut by a power saw.Police responded to a 911 call and arrived at a home near 28th and Avers in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, where they found the baby girl with "visible signs of trauma." The baby girl was pronounced dead at the scene.The Chicago Tribune reports police say a relative of the child -- a 52-year-old woman -- used a circular saw to cut the baby's throat -- apparently because she wouldn't stop crying.

Sentenced in federal court: Two men accused of moving heroin from Chicago to Marinette & Michigan

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Two men accused of working with others to move heroin from Chicago to Marinette, Wisconsin and Menominee, Michigan have been sentenced in federal court.The U.S. Attorney's Office says 55-year-old Brian King, of Chicago, has been sentenced to 2½ years in prison after pleading guilty to distributing more than 100 grams of heroin.Forty-one-year-old Donald Myers, of Menominee, has been sentenced to 21 months for using the phone with the intent of distributing heroin.The men's plea agreements say they worked with seven other co-defendants to move heroin supplied by King to the Marinette-Menominee area.They were sentenced earlier this week by federal Judge William Griesbach in Milwaukee.

Arrested for murder: Two teens taken into custody in shooting death of MIAD graduate, Wil Lewis

CHICAGO/MILWAUKEE/RACINE (WITI) -- Two Chicago teens have been arrested in Racine on warrants that charge them with the murder of a Rogers Park photographer in July.This, according to the Chicago Tribune.The Tribune reports 15-year-old Denzel Burke and 17-year-old Michael Phillips are both charged in Cook County, Illinois warrants with the killing of 28-year-old Wil Lewis.
