MILWAUKEE -- Officials with the Milwaukee Fire Department on Wednesday, Nov. 14 dropped off a big donation -- coats for an entire school!Every student at Penfield Montessori Academy got a coat as part of a program called "Operation Warm."Penfield is a public school for kids between the ages of 3 years old and 6 years old.

Red Cross helps displaced residents after apartment fire near Hopkins and Sheridan

MILWAUKEE -- The Red Cross responded to help residents displaced by a fire that broke out early Sunday morning, Nov. 11.It happened at a four-unit apartment building near Hopkins and Sheridan around 2:30 a.m.Fire officials said the fire was mostly outside of the building, but there was heavy smoke damage throughout the inside of the apartment complex.PHOTO GALLERYAll of the residents made it out safely.

New ordinance requires smoke detectors with non-renewable 10-year batteries

MILWAUKEE -- An ordinance passed by the Milwaukee Common Council last year mandates smoke detectors with non-renewable 10-year lithium batteries be installed in Milwaukee homes -- and officials with the Milwaukee Fire Department are working to spread the word about the new requirement."We had nine fire deaths this year.

'Vibrated the whole block:' 1 dead, woman and toddler injured after vehicle crashes into tree

MILWAUKEE -- A deadly crash on Milwaukee's northwest side leaves a 21-year-old woman dead and a 22-year-old woman and her 2-year-old toddler hospitalized with serious injuries.Near 67th and Marion is where one neighbor said the car hit so hard the engine was thrown onto the sidewalk."I just heard a big boom, like it kind of vibrated the whole block," said the neighbor.The sound and sight of the crash brought neighbors out of their homes."We seen one of the neighborhood people they got the passenger, the driver out and dragged her to the middle of the street," said the neighbor.Some took video as police took over the scene.

Infant not breathing brought into Milwaukee Fire Station 30 and has died

MILWAUKEE -- Officials with the Milwaukee Fire Department say an infant who was not breathing was brought into Fire Station 30 on Wednesday evening, Oct. 24 and later died.The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office confirms it was dispatched to the fire station -- located near Teutonia and Locust.

Students spread word about fire safety in 'poster to billboard' contest

MILWAUKEE -- Some young people in southeast Wisconsin are spreading the word about fire safety.Winners of the Milwaukee Fire Department's poster to billboard contest were treated to a pizza lunch on Friday, Oct. 12 at the fire station at Franklin and Brady on the city's east side.The theme of this year's competition was "Look, listen, be aware -- fire can happen anytime."

2 families displaced by fire at duplex near 12th and Center; firefighter burned

MILWAUKEE -- Two families were displaced by fire at a home near 12th and Center in Milwaukee Monday, Oct. 8, according to the American Red Cross.Red Cross officials said the duplex was heavily damaged.Seven people were displaced, and Milwaukee Fire Department officials said one firefighter was burned.

Fire Prevention Week: Domino's teams up with MFD to check smoke detectors

MILWAUKEE -- Domino's Pizza near 14th and Forest Home is teaming up with the Milwaukee Fire Department to promote Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 7-13) and make sure everyone has a working smoke detector.According to a news release, on Oct. 8, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., anyone who orders a pizza has the chance to be surprised at their front door when their pie arrives on board a fire engine.

Powdery substance found in letter at mayor's office deemed 'not harmful'

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team responded to City Hall Friday afternoon, Sept. 28 after a staffer in the mayor's office opening mail found a powdery substance within a letter.Around 1 p.m., an employee on the second floor opened the letter containing the unknown substance, which sent many people into a panic.
