UW regents to consider raising tuition at 3 schools

MADISON — University of Wisconsin System regents are considering raising tuition for nonresident and graduate students at three institutions next year.The regents' finance committee is set to vote on a proposal Thursday that calls for raising undergraduate nonresident tuition by $355 and graduate tuition by $430 at UW-Eau Claire; raising nonresident graduate business school tuition by $539 at UW-Milwaukee; and raising graduate nonresident tuition by $296 at UW-Stout.The increases are expected to generate about $186,275 in additional revenue across the three schools.Committee approval would clear the way for a full regents vote on the plan during a meeting Friday at UW-Madison.

Former dean wants $800K from UW-Milwaukee

MADISON — A former University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee business school dean wants the state Claims Board pay him nearly $800,000 because university officials broke employment promises.According to board documents, Timothy Smunt alleges the school broke its promise to rely on a survey of business schools to establish his salary and set his pay too low.

UWM Panthers fall to Illinois-Chicago 74-56

MILWAUKEE — Tarkus Ferguson had 19 points, Dikembe Dixson and Godwin Boahen scored 13 apiece, and Illinois-Chicago beat Milwaukee 74-56 on Monday night.The Flames (12-11, 7-3 Horizon League) have won four in a row for the first time since the 2012-13 season and their four-game road win streak is UIC's longest since winning six straight road games from Jan. 26 to March 9, 2004.Boahen and Michael Diggins hit back-to-back 3s and Ferguson made four free throws during a 10-3 run that gave the Flames a 40-31 lead at the break.

Marquette Golden Eagles fall to #1 Villanova 85-82

MILWAUKEE — Jalen Brunson scored 31 points despite leaving the game briefly with a left ankle injury, Donte DiVincenzo added 23 and top-ranked Villanova avoided another upset in Milwaukee with an 85-82 win Sunday over Marquette.Four players scored in double figures for the Wildcats (20-1, 7-1 Big East), who turned away surge after surge from Marquette (13-8, 4-5) to survive in front of a rowdy crowd at the Bradley Center.It was a year ago that Marquette upset a then-No. 1 Villanova team in another down-to-the-wire thriller .The Wildcats dodged another takedown despite some sloppy stretches of play.DiVincenzo's putback off a missed 3 with 15 seconds to go left Villanova with a five-point lead after Collin Gillespie stripped a driving Sacar Anim under the bucket at the other end for a steal with 49 seconds remaining.Andrew Rowsey led Marquette with 27 points, including a deep 3 from the wing that pulled the Golden Eagles to 83-80 with 1:30 left.They couldn't get any closer and repeat last year's heroics.Foul trouble plagued Marquette for much of the afternoon, with Big East-leading scorer Markus Howard (13 points) picking up his fourth foul with about 13 minutes left.

CINCINNATI — Four straight impressive wins — each led by a different player — have No. 8 Xavier back in form at the midpoint of the Big East season.Point guard Quentin Goodin scored 13 of his team-high 15 points while Xavier took control in the first half, and the Musketeers routed Marquette 89-70 on Wednesday night to remain unbeaten at home.The Musketeers (19-3, 7-2 Big East) surged ahead by 26 and were never threatened as they beat the Golden Eagles for the second time this season.

Study: Falls from tree stands result in spinal injury

MADISON — Researchers in Wisconsin say that spinal injuries account for more than half of the injuries that occur to hunters after falling from a tree stand.A review of the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics' trauma database for tree stand-related injuries from 1999 to 2013 shows 55 percent resulted in one or more spinal injuries, Wisconsin Public Radio reported ."Entering and exiting the tree stand is a very frequent time for people to fall because you're in that transition period ...

UW-Madison faculty, staff to get 4 percent pay increase

MADISON — The University of Wisconsin-Madison has announced plans to give faculty and staff a 4 percent pay increase over the next year.The Wisconsin State Journal reports that a 2 percent pay raise would occur in July followed by another 2 percent increase January 2019.The university says employees must have started in their current positions by Jan. 8, be meeting performance expectations and must complete campus sexual harassment training to qualify for the raise.University Chancellor Rebecca Blank says the raises will help the school keep talented employees.The university says it would be the first time since 2015 that its employees have gotten across-the-board raises.The state Legislature's Joint Committee on Employment Relations must formally approve the plan before it can take effect.
