MPS recognizes volunteer tutors for labor of love in schools

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Public School District volunteers are not used to the spotlight, but many of them were honored Tuesday, April 24th for their labor of love.The tutors at Cass Street Elementary School were rewarded for the time they donated to help teach students how to read. "It's humbling because it seems to be that I give so little, but we just get reinforced so much more," Cass Street tutor Lucia Murtaugh said."We train individuals in the comprehensive literacy plan to help during the school day in the classrooms to bring students that are a little below grade-level reading proficiency up to grade-level," Interfaith Tutor Program Manager Samantha Garrett said.All of the volunteers are part of Interfaith's Older Adult Program.

MPS to freeze supplemental pension, end practice

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Public Schools will freeze a supplemental pension for existing teachers and end the practice for new hires.The freeze takes effect July 2013, and is expected to save $5 million every year.

Milwaukee teachers vote down proposal to modify contract

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee teachers union voted down a proposal modify their 2010 contract -- and contribute a week of pay to Milwaukee Public Schools in an effort to help reduce class sizes.3,931 members from MTEA (Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association) voted on the matter. 2,296 teachers voted against modifying the contract and 1,635 were in favor of the idea.Now, Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Gregory Thornton is weighing in on the matter.

State lawmakers okay Milwaukee schools plan

MADISON (AP) -- The Assembly and Senate have agreed to allow Milwaukee schools to reopen negotiations for compensation or fringe-benefit concessions without nullifying existing union contracts.The measure, giving them 90 days, passed the Assembly early Wednesday.

11 people arrested outside Milwaukee's Madison H.S.

MILWAUKEE --Milwaukee police arrested 11 people after multiple fights broke out at Madison High School at 81st and Florist Friday afternoon.Police say the fights broke out inside the school and officers on the scene called for help.One officer was kicked in the face by an 18-year-old female student, after which police deployed an electronic control device to stop the threat.Eight people were arrested for disorderly conduct; three for resisting/obstructing an officer.Two police officers were hurt but did not require medical treatment.Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett issued the following statement in relation to the fights at Madison High School:“Today’s violent incident at Madison High School and yesterday’s after school fight at Washington High School are inexcusable.
