Icy roadways lead to spinouts, crashes on freeways

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Freezing rain turns roads icy on Friday night, January 10th -- and that led to spinouts and crashes on the freeways in southeast Wisconsin.When the rain initially hit, it formed black ice throughout the region -- causing trouble for those in cars and others on foot.

Sheriff's officials respond to crash involving semi near 45 and Hwy. 100

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials responded to a crash involving a semi and a vehicle that occurred on Highway 45 NB near Highway 100.It happened just after 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 2nd.Sheriff's officials say this believes to have been caused by the male driver of the semi crossing over into the lane in which the vehicle was traveling.The male driver of the vehicle suffered a minor injury and refused transport to the hospital.Monitor FOX6 News and FOX6Now.com for updates on this story.

Video shows Sheriff's squad struck by suspected drunk driver

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- New video shows a Milwaukee County Sheriff's squad car being hit by a suspected drunk driver.It's tough to watch, but the SUV goes across several lanes of traffic and slams into the deputy.It happened Wednesday morning, January 1st on I-94 near 16th Street.The deputy was stopped for another accident at the time.The deputy was not injured.The Sheriff's Office says a woman was arrested for DUI.

89-year-old Cudahy man cited for driving wrong way Monday

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's deputies responded to a wrong-way driving incident that occurred on Monday afternoon, December 30th.Sheriff's officials say an 89-year-old Cudahy man was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 794 from Howard Avenue just after 12:30 p.m.A witness saw the driver get off the freeway at Pennsylvania Avenue, where he was then stopped by a Cudahy police officer.The man told deputies he was confused at the Howard ramp.The man showed no signs of impairment, was cited for driving the wrong way on a divided highway and will be required to retest with the DMV for his driver's license.

Sheriff's Office says four standing at crash scene struck by vehicle

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials say four people standing at a crash scene in the Zoo Interchange on Tuesday, December 10th were struck by a vehicle.Sheriff's officials say it happened Tuesday around 1:40 p.m. Sheriff's officials say the incident was a series of chain reaction crashes involving four vehicles that occurred on the west-to-north ramp (I-94 EB to I-45 NB) in the Zoo Interchange.According to witnesses, in the first event, a driver of a tan Ford lost control, struck the median wall and spun out, coming to rest facing the wrong way in the curve.Sheriff's officials say a red van attempted to avoid that crash by moving over a lane, but was struck by a white utility truck.

54-year-old inmate charged in attack on correctional officers

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials say two correctional officers were assaulted on Monday, November 25th at the Milwaukee County Jail.Sheriff's officials say 54-year-old inmate John Meyers was being transported from a cell to a court appearance.Officials say Meyers charged at a correctional officer in the jail and ignored orders to return to the cell.

Suspect shot at Children's one of thousands with "felony warrant"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The 22-year-old man shot and injured by law enforcement officials inside Children's Hospital on Thursday afternoon, November 14th had a warrant out for "felon in possession of a firearm." Upon receiving a call suggesting the man was inside the hospital, Milwaukee police officers went there to arrest him.FOX6 News spoke with Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke less than an hour before Thursday afternoon's shooting incident for a story about finding people with active warrants.The man shot by police on Thursday at Children's is one of about 10,000 with felony warrants.Sheriff Clarke on Thursday announced the capture of more than 100 people -- the majority facing felonies."Ranging from homicides to shootings and other serious assaults, felons in possession of a firearm, armed robbery, sexual assaults -- some against children and drug dealing," Sheriff Clarke said."Operation Manhunt" is a partnership between the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Marshals, targeting the most serious and dangerous criminals in Milwaukee County."Finding subjects in an urban area who are trying to avoid arrest is labor intensive.

GLENDALE (WITI) -- The northbound and southbound lanes on I-43 near Silver Spring Road have reopened after a crash caused wires to fall on the freeway.The wires in the roadway apparently resulted from a crash between a semi-truck and a vehicle around 8:40 a.m. Nobody was hurt in the wreck.We Energies was called to the scene to remove the wire.Northbound traffic was diverted off I-43 at Silver Spring and being allowed to get back on at Good Hope Rd.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials say the Milwaukee County Bomb Squad was called out to a report of a suspicious package located at the Kinnickinnic Sports Complex on Wednesday, October 30th.Sheriff's officials say Sheriff’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians responded to the scene to inspect the package and determined that its contents were safe.The Sheriff’s Bomb Squad has responded to seven requests for service this month in the following communities: Milwaukee, Greenfield, Hales Corners, Glendale, West Milwaukee and Waukesha.

Sheriff's deputies arrest 19 sex offenders during "Trick-or-Treat"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of 19 registered sex offenders during "Operation Trick-or-Treat" held on Sunday, October 28th.The Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) Probation and Parole, and police departments in Milwaukee, West Allis, and West Milwaukee to ensure that sex offenders in Milwaukee County complied with DOC guidelines prohibiting interaction with trick-or-treaters.In addition to the Sunday initiative, Sheriff’s deputies also searched for a Top Ten list of child sex offenders on Thursday and Friday.Deputies found and arrested two on felony warrants from the Top Ten list, and one man turned himself in.During trick-or-treat hours on Sunday, deputies conducted checks on 200 registered sex offenders. 19 sex offenders were arrested for violation of their probation and parole conditions.Some of the violation details were:

Sheriff's officials seize $27K during traffic stop on Sunday

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials say $27,000 worth of cash was seized during an early morning traffic stop on Sunday, October 27th.Sheriff's officials say around 2:00 a.m., a deputy stopped a vehicle that had been deviating lanes on I-43 northbound from Chase Avenue to Highland Avenue.
