Spring break travel tips from Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

Spring breakers, you will want to hear this. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is offering record numbers of flights to sunny skies and warmer temperatures.

The airport on Thursday, March 3 was relatively quiet. But in a week, officials say it will look considerably different.

"There will be some slow points, there will be wait times, there will be lines," said Mark Lendvay from the Department of Homeland Security, TSA Wisconsin.

Airport officials expect a record number of travelers over the next six weeks. It is projected to be the busiest spring break season in Milwaukee's history.

"Our peak travel dates are projected to be March 12 and March 19. Those are both Saturdays. And on each of those peak days, MKE’s airlines will serve a record 28 non-stop departures in a single day to Florida," said Harold Mester, Mitchell's Director of Public Affairs and Marketing.

In total, 39 flights will head to warm destinations on peak days. The record numbers come as TSA workers say leisure travel for the most part is fully recovered.

"I wouldn’t say it’s Milwaukee and I can make it in 20 minutes I mean this is going to be a different experience for us," Lendvay said.

TSA officials are offering tips to travelers to ensure a smooth experience. That includes a reminder of prohibited items – and to follow instructions during the screening process.

"The things that we see the most obviously are liquids, gels, big bottles of water," said Jessica Mayle from the TSA Great Lakes Region.

Masks are required at the airport and on the plane until March 18.

Airport officials say on the busiest days, parking facilities could fill up. They recommend travelers use the MKE SmartPark app for iOS. It's also available for Android.
