Shorewood shooting, Milwaukee pursuit; suspect dead, officer injured

A shooting in Shorewood led to a Milwaukee police pursuit and left one man dead, and a police officer injured on Thursday, July 3.

What we know:

The shooting happened near Bartlett and Wood, a few blocks north of Capitol Drive, around 2:50 a.m.

The officer who was shot has been released from the hospital. The Shorewood Police Department said the officer was wearing a ballistic vest, which prevented life-threatening injuries.

"As our officers were responding to the scene, one of our squads took fire from an unknown assailant," Shorewood Police Chief Heather Wurth said. "At least two rounds struck the windshield – another round into the passenger side of the vehicle."

Three people, including a police officer, were shot in Shorewood on July 3. The officer who was shot has been released from the hospital.

Multiple law enforcement agencies searched for the suspect.

Around 9:23 a.m., officers located the shooting suspect in a vehicle, and a pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, the suspect shot at the officers. 

The pursuit ended in the area of Reservoir Ave and Dr. William Finlayson in Milwaukee.

At the end of the pursuit, the suspect continued to shoot at officers. Multiple officers fired their weapons and struck the suspect.

The male suspect sustained fatal gunshot injuries.

Witnesses told FOX6 News that they saw a police chase and heard gunshots. Witnesses also said they saw police surround a vehicle before pulling a body from it.

"Law enforcement tried to get the suspect out of the vehicle, stating that we know you need medical attention, so please just come out of the car," said resident Terri Howard.

No officers were injured during the vehicle pursuit and officer-involved shooting. The involved officers will be placed on leave status per their own agency's policy.

Police said the incident was believed to be isolated.
