Loved ones gather in Waukesha to remember "Nani" Negron

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Loved ones gathered Wednesday evening, April 24th at Frame Park in Waukesha to remember 24-year-old Shanel Negron -- known by her nickname "Nani." Negron was gunned down on Monday -- allegedly by her boyfriend, 26-year-old Eddie Callaway outside the Waukesha home the two shared.Negron was remembered on Wednesday as a candlelight vigil was held in her honor.

New details in Waukesha officer-involved shooting

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday, April 24th released some additional details on two officers involved in a shooting that occurred on Sunday, April 21st in the 500 block of Spring Crest Circle.A 44-year-old man was shot and wounded by Waukesha officers early Sunday, April 21st after officials say he lunged at them with knives.

Students at Horning Middle School "go blue" for autism awareness

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Kids at Horning Middle School in Waukesha added some blue to their hair in an attempt to raise awareness of autism.April is Autism Awareness Month, and the slogan is "Light it up blue."The public charity "Good Friends" is encouraging kids in Waukesha to wear blue highlights in their hair for autism."Good Friends" teaches kids how to accept and show empathy to those with autism.Middle schoolers at Horning Middle School got to pay $10 for a blue streak, feather or blue tinsel -- or $25 for all three."We have been at about 10 different schools this month locally here at the Waukesha district and across the board they have just been blowing us away with their support for the good friends organization and autism awareness.

STEM Academy students clean up the parks

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- More than 800 STEM Academy students dressed in boots and gloves spent Earth Day (Monday, April 22nd) cleaning up the parks."We are helping the Earth and it`s important for the Earth to be clean," fourth-grader Avani Tandon said.Fourth and fifth-grade students collected trash and recyclables at Frame Park to celebrate Earth Day."We’re finding a lot of plastic mostly bottles and we’re finding a lot of foam things," fifth-grader Grace Armbrust said.Teachers hope the kids learn a powerful lesson about helping the environment."It teaches the kids to take care of their surroundings and the public land that they'll be using," teacher Laurie Probst said.This is the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day.

Waukesha Co. Sheriff's officials investigate accidental shooting

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Waukesha County Sheriff's officials are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning, April 14th in the Village of North Prairie.Officials say two shooting patients arrived at the hospital with gunshot wounds around 4:00 a.m. Sunday.Officials say a 24-year-old Burlington man shot himself in the left hand while handling a loaded revolver in his friend's apartment.The revolver also shot a 24-year-old woman who lives in the apartment.

Watching the water in Ozaukee Co. as rain continues to fall

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- With rainfall all week long and even more rain in the forecast, officials are watching the water in Ozaukee County."This is our 17th year on the river at Fiddleheads, so we've seen a few of these, but this ranks up there," Fiddleheads co-owner Ray Marcy said.On Thursday, April 11th, after days of rainfall, Marcy had about 300 sandbags stacked in the hopes of preventing the Milwaukee River from coming too close."It should peak later on tonight, and should hold at that peak level for about 48 hours and then begin to subside.

Mukwonago man to stand trial for Brookfield Subway robbery

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- 30-year-old Salvador Sanchez of Mukwonago will stand trial in the case of a robbery at the Brookfield Subway restaurant.Sanchez has pleaded not guilty to a charge of robbery with a threat of force for allegedly robbing a Town of Brookfield Subway restaurant.The criminal complaint against Sanchez indicates on March 13th, Sanchez walked into the Subway Restaurant just before 10 p.m. The complaint says Sanchez "came in and was charging towards the count." It says Sanchez said, "I'm sorry to do this guys, but give me all your money in the drawer." A restaurant worker told police Sanchez then lifted up his shirt to show off a handgun in his waistband.The complaint says Sanchez "grabbed the majority of the money in the cash drawer with his right hand and left the story, dropped a $5 on the floor near the counter as he fled."A worker told police as Sanchez left the restaurant, he stated, "Thanks guys, have a good night.

Montano bound over for trial in Waukesha hit-and-run case

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Edgar Montano has been bound over for trial in a Waukesha hit-and-run case.The case against a hit-and-run suspect in Waukesha was forced to start over because Montano did not have an interpreter present.Police say Edgar Montano was drunk when he hit two women who were pushing a car near near 59th and East Broadway.

Brookfield police investigating armed robbery at Subway

BROOKFIELD (WITI) -- Brookfield police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at the Subway store on Bluemound Road on Wednesday, March 13th, around 10:00 p.m.Police say the suspect entered the restaurant, walked up to the counter and demanded cash.

Officials respond to standoff in Waukesha on Sunday

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Waukesha police officials on Sunday, March 10th responded to a standoff situation in the 2100 block of Kilps Drive.Officials say they met a child at the residence who reported her parents were fighting.In interviewing the 29-year-old wife, she reported that her 30-year-old husband was in the basement of the house with a handgun.Officers immediately evacuated the four children and wife from the house and called in reinforcements.All available officers, deputies from the Waukesha County Sheriffs Department and the Regional Bearcat Armored Vehicle responded to the residence.Later, the 30-year-old suspect surrendered without incident.This case is still being investigated and charges have not yet been referred to the Waukesha County District Attorney.

Four-year-old boy alerts residents to fire in 16-family apartment building

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Waukesha fire officials are investigating a fire that occurred in a multi-family residential building on Sunday, March 10th in the 1700 block of Elder Street.City of Waukesha Fire Department units arrived on scene at 10:47 a.m. and found a working fire in in the second floor bedroom of a 16-family apartment building.Fire crews made an aggressive interior attack, quickly bringing the fire under control.

Truck slams into home in Waukesha during Tuesday's snowfall

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Snowy conditions, slippery roadways and decreased visibility led to a crash in Waukesha on Tuesday, March 5th that drew We Energies crews to the scene.It happened near Sunset and Grant in Waukesha -- where a truck slammed into a home.We Energies crews were called to the scene due to gas concerns.We're told no one was injured in this crash.
