Officials: Report of fire onboard forces plane to make emergency landing at Newark airport

NEWARK, N.J. — Flights resumed after an aircraft made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty Airport Saturday morning, March 9 airport officials tweeted.Air Transat Flight 942, a Boeing 737, departed from Montreal, Canada and was headed to Fort Lauderdale, Florida when it reported a possible fire in the cargo hold and diverted the flight to Newark Liberty International Airport at about 8:30 a.m., the FAA said in a tweet.

Work on Highway 100 in Hales Corners ramping up starting Monday, March 11

MILWAUKEE -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will be ramping up work for 2019 season with Stage 3 work on the west side of Highway 100, the southbound lanes, beginning on Monday, March 11.Officials say traffic was switched over to the east side portion of Highway 100 in late 2018.

Snowmobiler dies after crash with semi in Outagamie County

OUTAGAMIE COUNTY -- A snowmobiler is dead following a crash involving a semi-tractor trailer in Outagamie County on Thursday, March 7.According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, it happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. in the Village of Shiocton.The WisDOT says the snowmobiler was on a trail near State Highway 54 near Old 54 Road.

RACINE COUNTY -- In anticipation of extreme cold temperatures, coupled with potential heaving pavement conditions, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will close the outside right lane along northbound I-94 at County G.Beginning Saturday, March 2, northbound I-94 will see a single lane closure from County G to Ryan Road.

1 dead in chain-reaction crash on Highway 26 in Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY -- One person is dead following a chain-reaction crash that happened just south of Watertown on Wednesday, Feb. 20.According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 26 near Ebenezer Road around 11:30 a.m. Officials say a vehicle collided into the rear of a semi tanker.PHOTO GALLERYWhile responding to the scene a third vehicle crashed, causing one of the wrecked vehicles to burst into flames.

FAA probes Southwest calculations of baggage weight on jets

WASHINGTON -- Federal officials have told Southwest Airlines to fix the way it calculates the weight of luggage loaded on flights after finding frequent mistakes during a yearlong investigation.Southwest said Tuesday that it has made improvements in its methods for calculating the weight and balance of loads, and that it isn't facing enforcement action.The airline said that it voluntarily reported the issue to the Federal Aviation Administration last year.The FAA investigation was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.The newspaper said internal FAA documents showed that the airline made frequent mistakes in calculations and luggage-loading practices that could cause errors when pilots compute their plane's takeoff weight.Southwest crews count bags they load and use an average weight to calculate the load.

JUNEAU COUNTY -- Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation shared witness video of a crash involving a vehicle and a snowplow that happened during a storm on Sunday, Feb. 17 in Juneau County.DOT officials noted "whiteout conditions are dangerous," and reminded drivers to please slow down and also give snowplow drivers plenty of room to work.In the Juneau County incident, a driver slammed into the rear of a snowplow.The driver of the vehicle had to be taken to the hospital from the scene.DOT officials said that driver would be cited for going too fast for conditions.
