Towing, repair shops getting ready for influx of bikes during 110th

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- As Milwaukee gears up for the big Harley-Davidson Anniversary Celebration, thousands of bikes are headed into the city, and area towing and repair shops are getting set for a busy Labor Day weekend.With the chance that a few riders may encounter mechanical problems during the Harley celebration this weekend, businesses around town are ready to help.The garage at Suburban Harley-Davidson in Thiensville is filled with bikes in need of a tweak or two!Service Manager Chris Weiand says it will only get more hectic in the coming days."We’re an extremely high volume dealership here,  anywhere between 250 to 500 on a normal week.

Dealerships gearing up as riders arrive for Harley's 110th

Layton Ave. closed between 60th & 68th until September 3rd

GREENFIELD (WITI) --  Layton Avenue will be closed between 60th Street and 68th Street beginning Monday morning, August 26th and will reopen Tuesday morning, September 3rd due to the Harley-Davidson 110th anniversary celebration.From the east, Layton Avenue will be completely closed at 60th Street.From the west, Layton Avenue will be closed at 68th Street and open to local traffic only with limited access to the businesses on Layton including Grand Appliance, Verlo Mattress, Advance Camping and the professional offices.Layton will be completely closed at 64th.During this Harley 110th, we expect more than 100,000 visitors to our city.

Hotel rooms for Harley-Davidson 110th may be available

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- People from all over the globe will be descending on Milwaukee for the biggest party of the summer, Harley-Davidson's 110th Anniversary -- and hotel rooms are hard to come by.President and CEO of the Wisconsin Hotel and Lodging Association, Trisha Pugal, says while finding a place to stay may be difficult, procrastinators could be in luck."A lot of the availability came around when some of the larger blocks, people would block a group of rooms, and as it got closer their numbers weren't exactly what they thought," explained Pugal.Several groups overbooked rooms at various hotels across southeastern Wisconsin, and those who missed out on booking earlier, now get their chance."They are very fortunate because some of the rooms were released, otherwise they wouldn't have had an opportunity," Pugal said.The number of available rooms changes daily, even hourly, in some cases.

Harley-Davidson watching for counterfeit items during celebration

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Harley-Davidson licensed clothing will be flying off the shelves during the 110th Anniversary Celebration, but the company's legal department will be busy keeping an eye out for counterfeit merchandise at the reunion."We have over 20,000 shirts that are event specific for the 110th Anniversary," said Chaz Hastings of Milwaukee Harley-Davidson.The company aims to protect the Harley-Davidson logo from those who produce knock-offs and try to pass off items as licensed merchandise."We, as dealers, also police the events because it bites into our pockets and in the end, when somebody buys that, they think it's something that we sold them or they'll come to us to complain about the poor merchandise when it had nothing to do with us, but it's got a fake bar and shield logo on it," said Hastings.Milwaukee attorney Jill Welytok stressed the importance of protecting a trademark for an international company such as Harley-Davidson."The trademark is the identity of the source of a quality product like the Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

99-year-old biker still thrilled over Harley-Davidson

NEW BERLIN (WITI) -- He's been around almost as long as Harley-Davidson itself, and Joe "Chester" Zawalich of Brookfield, is getting plenty of recognition during the 110th Anniversary Celebration.Zawalich is one of, if not the, oldest Harley-Davidson riders in the world.
