NEW BERLIN -- An elementary school in New Berlin celebrated the service of veterans in a special way on Friday, November 11th.The "Reagan Gives Back" event for Veterans Day at Ronald Reagan Elementary really started a few weeks ago.Students sold U.S. flags in hopes of raising more than $500 -- the amount needed to send a one veteran on an Honor Flight.Nearly 700 students gathered on the school's front lawn -- and knew they had done even better than their goal."Our goal was to sell flags to put out in the school yard to raise $500 to send one veteran on an honor flight.

14-year-old girl teaches horse the perfect trick for Veterans Day

CLINTON, Missouri -- A Missouri girl who wanted to do something special for Veterans Day decided changing her Facebook profile picture or using the right hashtag wasn't enough.Instead, the "Show Me State" teen demonstrated her own respect for the country's veterans by teaching her horse a special trick.Autumn Winkler shared two photos on Monday of her daughter, Landyn Mount, with her American Saddlebred horse "An Unlisted Angel" and a video that shows the horse doing a new trick it's been working on for a few months. "This past summer, Landyn decided she needed to teach her best friend in the world (the horse) how to bow in case any veterans ever stopped by the barn," Winkler said.The horse is currently being kept in a stable just west of Clinton, Missouri."Everyone said this horse was untrainable, and this kid has worked nonstop to prove them wrong," Winkler said.Winkler says Landyn just turned 14 and thought of teaching the horse the trick herself."Landyn would love to send out a warm thank you to all the veterans in the area," Winkler added.Landyn's great-grandfather served in World War II, her grandfather served in the Vietnam War and her uncle also served in the military.Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11.

13-year-old injured after biting into razor hidden in Halloween candy bar, mom says

HAMILTON COUNTY, Indiana – Indiana sheriff's officials are encouraging parents to check their children’s Halloween candy after a mother reported that her 13-year-old daughter found a metal razor in one of her candy bars.The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says the teen discovered the blade when she bit into a 3 Musketeers Minis that she received while Trick-or-Treating in the Orchard Park neighborhood."She was seen by medical personnel and is being treated for any possible injuries she might have sustained as a result of the metal inside the candy," according to the sheriff's office.The girl suffered a laceration to the inside of her mouth in the incident, according to WTHR.The girl’s parents contacted the sheriff’s office and turned over the metal piece to detectives, who are investigating the incident.The sheriff’s office says this appears to be an isolated incident and no other reports have been made, but they encourage parents in all areas to make sure to examine all treats before allowing children to eat them.
