Preparing students for the workforce: MPS program celebrates success

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The goal of MPS’ "School to Work" Transition Program is to get high school students with special needs ready for the workforce.“A lot of kids need this opportunity,” said Fonda Scott, a parent of a student in the program.“It gives us a chance to show that this is what we can really do,” said her daughter, LaFonda Jordon.On Thursday, May 22nd, over 100 students currently in the program were recognized at Mount Mary University.Program supervisors say that a classroom can only take students so far when it comes to preparing them for the workforce.The School to Work Transition Program fills in those blanks.It’s an employment readiness program that gives high school students with special needs the hands on environment they need to continue their success after school.“We have the complete spectrum of students with special needs.

Proposed MPS budget increases investment in classrooms

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Gregory Thornton proposed a 2014-15 budget to invest in classrooms and increases the standard of care for students across the district.The proposal includes adding another 50 art, music, and physical education teaching positions into MPS schools.The 50 new positions for 2014-15 are on top of the positions added into schools for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.

Gregory Thornton officially resigns as MPS superintendent

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned Milwaukee Public Schools superintendent Gregory Thornton has officially resigned from the district.This comes one day after Thornton signed a contract worth more than a million dollars with Baltimore City Public Schools.Thornton's contract will have a base salary of $290,000 -- compared to the $265,000 base pay he received from MPS.Thornton starts in Baltimore in July.He served as MPS superintendent for four years.Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Michael Bonds has issued the following statement to FOX6 News on Thornton's resignation:“I’m grateful for Dr.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Public Schools teachers and psychologists were sent an email on Tuesday morning, March 4th indicating they would be getting a one-percent bonus in an upcoming check -- a move that has the teachers union crying foul.MPS Board, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, decided that instead of increasing the base salaries of teachers and psychologists, give them this one-time payment, equaling one-percent of their salary, for a total of $3.6 million.A similar one-time payment went to support and administrative staff in January, costing $3.5 million.The email sent out on Tuesday, signed by outgoing Superintendent Dr.
