Local perspective:

When you register for the More Than Pink Walk, you are joining a community that understands the impact we have when we come together and raise funds in support of a shared vision of a world without breast cancer.

Fighters, survivors and their supporters walked side by side, carrying hope with every step. The event, organizers said, was more than a fundraiser — it was a show of solidarity, support and strength.

For Colleen Thomas, who is currently battling breast cancer, the walk serves as fuel to keep fighting.

"It’s really empowering to see all the survivors, the women that are battling and fighting," Thomas said. "It just really warms your heart."

Her team wore shirts printed with her motto: Inhale courage, exhale fear.

"That is our motto that we have expressed since I was diagnosed in June," Thomas said.

Nikki Panico, the organization’s executive director, knows the fight personally. She lost her mother and aunt to breast cancer in the same year she was first diagnosed.

"It’s not just a job for me," Panico said. "I lost my mom and my aunt within a month of each other … and I was diagnosed for the first time the same year they passed."

Funds raised from the event will go toward breast cancer research, patient support and community outreach.

Supporter Elizabeth Kay encouraged women to take action.

"I’m also here to tell women to know your risk, talk to your doctor and know what is normal for your body," she said.
