Inspired by one of their own: Kenosha high schoolers donate to Children's Hospital program

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Kenosha high school students gave back in a big way on Thursday, June 12th.Students from Kenosha Bradford High School presented a check for $12,800 to Children's Hospital's "Flashes of Hope" program.The program pays for a professional photographer to take pictures of cancer patients with a loved one, and they're then given copies.The Bradford students began raising the money after a fellow student was diagnosed with leukemia.

Sheriff's officials: Men headed home from Stumble Inn Tavern at time of fatal crash

KENOSHA CO. (WITI) -- One person was killed in a crash that shut down U.S. Highway 45 Sunday, June 8th.The crash happened early Sunday -- just before 2:00 a.m. on Highway 45 north of State Highway 50.Kenosha County Sheriff's officials say a single vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 45 when the driver lost control of the vehicle in a curve.The vehicle slid sideways into the west ditch and struck a culvert -- which caused the vehicle to roll multiple times.The vehicle then struck a fire hydrant and utility pole -- snapping the utility pole off.Sheriff's officials say the vehicle was occupied by two local men -- who were on their way home from the Stumble Inn Tavern -- located at Highway 45 and State Highway 142.27-year-old Brian Smith from the Town of Salem was killed in the crash. 29-year-old Christopher Orozco  from the Village of Paddock Lake was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.Sheriff's officials say Orozco was placed under arrest for homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.That man also received traffic-related citations -- as speed appears to have been a factor in this crash -- according to Sheriff's officials.A We Energies crew was dispatched to the scene to replace the utility pole.

ROBBED: Kenosha police seeking suspects in BMO Harris incident

KENOSHA (WITI) -- Kenosha police are seeking the suspect responsible for a bank robbery at the BMO Harris Bank on 52nd Street.It happened on Friday, May 30th around 3:30 p.m.Police describe the suspect as a white man with a thin build.

Man dies after shooting near Shalom Center in Kenosha...but who shot him?

KENOSHA (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned a 33-year-old man shot near the Shalom Center in Kenosha on Wednesday afternoon, May 21st has now died.The Shalom Center is located in the 1700 block of 62nd Street.Kenosha police say a 33-year-old man was shot while sitting in a car.It is unknown at this time whether the man shot himself -- or whether he was shot by someone else.Police were conducting interviews with the man, and witnesses in the neighborhood.Neighbors tell FOX6 News they heard one loud "bang," and then saw a man bleeding in the street.Neighbors say the man got right back into the vehicle and drove himself to the hospital.Neighbors say a second man jumped out of the truck and took off running.The shooting incident happened just before 1:30 p.m.Police have not recovered a weapon.The victim in this case was able to drive himself to a hospital for treatment.He later died as a result of injuries suffered.The investigation is ongoing.Kenosha Unified School District tells FOX6 News four schools have been given the "all clear" but were briefly placed on lockdown due to the incident near the Shalom Center.Those schools include: Brass Community School, Frank Elementary School, Kenosha School of Technology, and Lincoln Middle School.

DISMISSED: Restraining order filed by parents of six-year-old against five-year-old

KENOSHA COUNTY (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned a judge has dismissed a restraining order filed by the parents of a Kenosha County six-year-old against her five-year-old classmate.This case reportedly all started with a boy telling a girl he wants to slit her throat and watch her bleed -- according to a police report obtained by FOX6 News.The students in this case are in kindergarten at Prairie Lane Elementary School in Kenosha County.Police records indicate "bullying behavior" has been going on since April.In one instance, the bully kicked the girl in the face and later threw sand and rocks at her, according to the police report.The police report says the victim's parents told school officials about the increasingly violent behavior, but felt enough wasn't being done, so they filed a retraining order against the boy they see as a bully.In court documents, a handwritten note written by the victim's mother, states her daughter had scratches on her face and was stabbed in the back with a stick during one altercation.A spokesperson for the Kenosha Unified School District declined to comment on camera, but issued this statement to FOX6: "KUSD is working directly with the families involved and will continue working with them.

Sheriff's spokesperson: Motorcyclists "very lucky" after rolling their bikes on I-94

KENOSHA COUNTY (WITI) -- Kenosha County Sheriff's officials say two motorcycle riders from Illinois suffered minor injuries when their bikes rolled in the middle of a pack of motorcycles on I-94 NB -- about a mile south of Highway 165.Sheriff's officials say two men in their 20s were speeding and driving recklessly.Officials say one biker hit the other, and they rolled over four lanes of traffic!The men were transported to the hospital for treatment of their minor injuries.They were cited for speeding and reckless driving.A Sheriff's Department spokesperson described the men to FOX6 News as "very lucky."Traffic was slowed in the area as crews worked the crash scene.

Kenosha police arrest man following robbery, foot chase

KENOSHA (WITI) -- The Kenosha Police Department is applauding the actions of one of their own, Officer Austin Hancock, after he successfully apprehended a man suspected of robbing a CVS Pharmacy early Friday morning, May 9th.According to officials, the suspect entered a CVS Pharmacy on 22nd Avenue and announced a "stick up." The suspect then smashed a cash register and took money before fleeing the scene.Approximately one hour after the robbery, Officer Hancock observed a male walking who matched the description of the robbery suspect.

SUN PRAIRIE (WITI) -- A tribute was held Tuesday evening, April 29th in Madison to remember a Sun Prairie couple who lost their lives following a crash in Kenosha County last week.34-year-old Bram Dorresteijn died on Sunday night from injuries he suffered in the crash.His wife, 33-year-old Shari Dorresteijn died at the scene.The crash happened Thursday night, April 24th on I-94 just north of 38th Street in Kenosha County.According to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were called to the scene around 10:45 p.m. after a minivan struck a semi stopped in traffic on I-94.The Sun Prairie couple leaves behind a two-year-old son and two-month-old daughter.Bram Dorresteijn was a soccer player at the University of Wisconsin-Madison -- where he met his wife, so it seemed fitting to host Tuesday's tribute at the Keva Sports Center in Madison.A "GoFundMe.com" account has been set up for the family, and has generated over $105,000.A separate fund has been set up through the First Business Bank in Madison.

Kenosha man arrested, charged in several gas drive-offs

MOUNT PLEASANT (WITI) -- Mount Pleasant police say a 26-year-old Kenosha man has been arrested in connection with several gas drive-offs.26-year-old Andrew Jones faces three felonies, and three misdemeanors.Mount Pleasant police say on February 22nd, officers responded to the Kwik Trip on Durand Avenue after a store employee notified police that a vehicle was in their lot by a gas pump that matched the description of a suspect vehicle involved in several gas drive-offs from two Kwik Trip stores.Investigators were looking into two cases involving the Durand Avenue Kwik Trip and three cases involving the Kwik Trip on State Highway 20 and I-94.Police say that when the suspect vehicle arrived at the Durand Avenue Kwik Trip on February 22nd, the store employee did not authorize the pump.
