West Coast states promise access to abortion, contraceptives

Within hours of the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade on Friday, the governors of California, Oregon and Washington promised to defend access to reproductive health care, including abortion and contraceptives.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday, June 24 ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. What happens next is now up to the state. That means an 1849 law is what stands, but exactly how it will be enforced is uncertain.
