On 1st day of summer, MFD kicks off 'Warm Up Winter' campaign to buy coats for kids

MILWAUKEE -- On Thursday, June 21, the first day of summer, Milwaukee firefighters had winter on the mind.MFD officials kicked off their 2018 "Warm Up Winter" campaign -- asking people to help fill the boot.The money will be used to purchase brand new winter coats for children in need."This is our big fundraiser for the year -- to get the money for the coats for these kids, so it's a good thing for the kids of the City of Milwaukee that don't have jackets for the winter time," said Troy Klemstein, Milwaukee Fire Department captain.Firefighters will also be collecting donations on Friday and Saturday at intersections near the 30 Milwaukee fire stations.

MFD: 1 taken to hospital following 3-vehicle crash near 76th and Good Hope

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a crash Sunday morning, June 17 near 76th and Good Hope.It happened just before 10 a.m. and involved three vehicles.According to Milwaukee police, one person was taken to the hospital with serious injures and several others were taken for non-life threatening injuries.The cause of the crash is under investigation.PHOTO GALLERY

Mother charged in connection with death of daughter who died after fire reaches plea deal

MILWAUKEE -- The mother of a baby girl who died after a fire near 28th and Meinecke in Milwaukee in February has reached a plea deal in the case against her.Quintella Owens, 31, of Milwaukee on Monday, June 11 pleaded no contest to one count of neglecting a child, consequence is death, as party to a crime.Two other charges were dismsised as a result of the plea deal.Owens will be sentenced on Aug. 17.Quamyiia Owens, who just celebrated her first birthday in December, died at the hospital on Feb. 11 after the fire Feb. 10 prosecutors say was sparked by Owens' brother, after three children were left home alone.

Red Cross assists 21 people displaced following fire on Milwaukee's north side

MILWAUKEE -- The Red Cross is helping 21 people who were displaced after a fire near North Palmer Street and Concordia Avenue.Officials were called to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, June 9.The Milwaukee Fire Department says the fire affected the first and second floor of the home.The Red Cross is providing emergency aid, car and mental health resources for those displaced. 12 of the people displaced were children.The cause of the fire is under investigation.
