Wauwatosa Fourth of July Parade marks 80th anniversary

WAUWATOSA (WITI) -- It's one of the biggest Fourth of July parades in the Milwaukee area, and on Thursday, July 4th, the Wauwatosa Fourth of July Parade celebrated its 80th anniversary.The parade didn't start until 9:00 a.m., but hundreds lined North Avenue as early as 5:00 a.m. to get front row seats.

Whitefish Bay marks 60th anniversary of Fourth block party

(CNN) -- It'll be firecracker hot in the Southwest on the Fourth of July, but the Southeast and Ohio River Valley will be so drenched that floods are possible.Meanwhile, the Northeast will get a reprieve from storms that left knee-deep flooding in some areas."The most widespread showers and thunderstorms on Thursday will be from the central Gulf Coast northward into the Ohio River Valley," the National Weather Service said. "There is a slight risk of excessive rainfall/flash flooding across much of the Southeast through Wednesday."As the wet weather system moves up toward the Midwest, the relatively cool temperatures along the East Coast will give way to more summer-like conditions in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.Still sweating in the WestBut the East Coast warm-up will have nothing on the oppressive heat wave scorching the West Coast.While the Pacific Northwest will get some relief, "extreme heat will continue across the Western states, especially the Southwest," the weather service said.Cities in California, Nevada and Arizona have already suffered through heat topping 120 degrees in the past few days.The heat was so torrid in Idaho that Boise residents could bake cookies without an oven.CNN affiliate KTVB placed a pan of chocolate chip cookie dough on the dashboard of a car.

DOT: Most construction on hold for Fourth of July holiday

WISCONSIN (WITI) -- Although construction on most major highway projects in Wisconsin will be suspended during the Fourth of July holiday, motorists might still encounter narrow lanes and lane shifts, which require reduced speeds in work zones, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).“To keep holiday traffic flowing as smoothly as possible, most construction and planned repairs in work zones will cease by around noon on Wednesday, July 3, and will resume on Friday, July 5.

Focus on women who served during 148th Memorial Day parade

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The focus of the 148th consecutive Memorial Day parade in Milwaukee was those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country -- specifically women who have served in the military.The "Donut Dollies" served during the Vietnam and Korean wars.Diane Shufelt was one of about 600 Donut Dollies serving in the Vietnam War."We ran recreation centers and put on recreation programs for U.S. service men," Shufelt said.The parade also honored women currently serving."There`s a lot of contributions that women in the military have made past and present and sometimes we just don`t get the recognition that some of our male counterparts do.
