Two students honored for actions in Sikh Temple shooting

LAKE GENEVA -- Two young students from St. Francis de Sales Parish School in Lake Geneva were honored on Thursday, November 15th for their courageous actions during the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek.

Abhay and Amanat Singh, siblings who are in fourth and sixth grades at St. Francis, were outside of the temple on Sunday, August 5th when Wade Page approached the temple and began shooting.

"We just went out for some fresh air, and then we were just playing and having some jokes. Then all of the sudden, we see a guy coming out of his car. And usually, we thought maybe he needs help, or needs directions. And then, all of the sudden, he speed-walks and starts firing," Abhay said.

The 11-year-old and his nine-year-old sister, Amanat, were playing outside the temple when they spotted the shooter who would eventually kill six and wound four others before police say he killed himself.

At one point, Abhay estimates he and his sister were just 15 feet away from Page, but not for long. They ran into the temple and alerted everybody inside. Then they hid in a crowded pantry until the shooting stopped.

"Hot, squished, and small," said Amanat. "But it was better than being outside."

Because of their actions, the Singhs were honored by the Davidson Yell and Tell program -- which is a charitable foundation set up to teach young children what to do when they observe a dangerous situation.

August 5th -- the day of the Sikh Temple shooting was Amanat's ninth birthday, and about 300 people were expected at the temple for a celebration.
