Kroger commits $1M to fund for victims, survivors of warehouse shooting

A fund is established to help those impacted by the Oconomowoc warehouse shooting two weeks ago -- and you can donate.

The tragedies will be two weeks old tomorrow.  The healing process continues."

With the warehouse shooting in Oconomowoc still fresh in so many minds… Roundy's is establishing a fund for the victims and survivors, starting with a $1 million donation from the parent company, Kroger.

"The fund is for the victim’s families and others who have been affected by the tragedy closely," said Jim Hyland with Roundy’s Public Affairs.

Police say 39-year old Kevin Schneider of Milwaukee and 51-year old Kevin Kloth of Germantown were shot and killed by the coworker, 41-year old Fraron Cornelius of Wauwatosa.  Cornelius later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate.

The motive remains unknown.

"Counseling has been going on since the tragedy has occurred and will continue to go on as long as necessary," Hyland said.

Hyland hopes to grow the fund through customer and community donations. A GoFundMe has been established and you can also text a donation.

Meanwhile, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market and Mariano’s stores are offering customers ways to donate to the Roundy’s Oconomowoc Distribution Center Victims and Survivor’s Fund.

"They can round up their change, obviously or they can donate a set dollar amount," he said. "They will be prompted by the cashier."

A separate, third-party group – the National Compassion Fund – will administer the funds. Hyland says Cornelius’s family will also be eligible to receive some of the money raised.

"Why was it important to include them?" FOX6 asked.

"Well, we had three victims – and I’ll just leave it at that. We had three victims," Hyland said.

Starting Monday, customers can easily and quickly support the fund in the following ways:

  • Generous associates, customers and other partners who want to help can give directly at https://www.gofundme.com/roundys-victims-fund or text to give at 243725 – keyword: RoundysStrong
  • Register donations raised via Round Up, now thru April 30, at Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, and Mariano’s stores will be directed to the Fund from the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation.
  • Contributions made to this Fund are tax-deductible.

Schneider, Kloth and Cornelius all worked for Roundy's for two decades.

The company says a permanent memorial at the warehouse is also in the early stages.
