A man is in jail after pointing a gun at Cudahy police.

Initial police response

What they're saying:

Their neighborhood became the scene of a police shooting and standoff on Saturday night, July 5.

One man, who didn’t want to show his face for safety reasons, told FOX6 that it started when a neighbor behind him randomly threw items, including this bottle, into his backyard.

"As I go assess the damage in the back yard, there’s a big broken piece of siding on the back of our house," he said. "We call the cops immediately. I go, I tell them and immediately they get out here."

Police made their way to a nearby home to find out what was going on.

Shooting and standoff

What they're saying:

Officers say a man came to the door holding a gun. Police quickly took cover.

Police say the man stepped out of the home and pointed a gun at officers.

That’s when police say a Cudahy officer fired their weapon.

The suspect went back inside the house.

"I was sitting there on my phone. It starts ringing like take shelter…I was like oh crap," said Duffek, who sheltered in place during the standoff.

"I’m like, I don’t want a bullet to come through my house, like let’s just not," she added.

Around 1 a.m. on Sunday morning, July 6, police say the suspect surrendered.

He’s a 45-year-old Cudahy man.

Police say they found a handgun at the scene.

Neighbors are relieved no one was hurt.

"That’s kind of concerning. The emotions or tensions are so high and people have access to guns," said Wilhelm.

What's next:

Cudahy police say the suspect who was taken into custody is now in the Milwaukee County Jail.

The District Attorney’s Office will investigate this case for potential charges.

This investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to call the Cudahy Police Department at 414-769-2260.
