Business owner sifts through rubble of charred building: "It's my faith that's getting me through this"

MILWAUKEE -- It was a much calmer Milwaukee on Wednesday evening, August 17th -- and it appears the community is starting to heal.

That said, Sherman Park is still closing early, the curfew for teenagers is still in effect -- and for one business owner, the damage to his business is worse than ever imagined.

Gary Mulheron

"14 years and it all goes up in smoke," said Gary Mulheron, owner of A to Z Wholesale. "This is a little traumatic."

Mulheron examined on Wednesday what was left of his business. A to Z Wholesale was set on fire during Milwaukee's weekend of unrest. The inside of the building is destroyed.

"All the family pics are gone, grandkid pictures are gone," Mulheron said.

Ash and rubble cover the floor. Juice and soda inventory are destroyed by flames.

"I know what he's feeling. I know he's hurting," said Adam Mulheron, Gary's son.

Adam Mulheron saved what he could from the destruction -- an old coat now becomes a symbol of resilience. It is damaged but not destroyed by the fire, smoke and heat.

"I'm going to do what I can with it and frame it," said Adam Mulheron.

Gary Mulheron thought he would be able to fix up the building. But now, he says that is simply impossible.

"It's my faith that's getting me through this," Gary Mulheron said. "I'm not going to let negativity take me down. I ain't going to let it beat me."
