2-year-old boy becomes stuck, dies after apparently climbing out window near 40th & Wright

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are investigating after a two-and-a-half-year-old boy was found dead by family members Tuesday, August 23rd near 40th and Wright -- at his grandmother's house.

Officials with the Milwaukee Fire Department told FOX6 News they were dispatched around 4:15 p.m. The medical examiner and police also responded to the scene.

Neighbors told FOX6 News a window fell on the child, and the child became stuck in the first-floor window.

Family members told FOX6 News there were no adults home at the time of this incident. The child was being watched by teenagers when he apparently wandered away.

It appears he may have tried to climb out of the window when he became trapped. Neighbors said the boy may have been stuck for some time -- unable to breathe before he was found hanging in the window.

Neighbors rushed to help when they heard screams, and began CPR before paramedics arrived.

"I found out what was going on and I basically started doing CPR. I think he was trying to come out feet first, and the window fell down on his neck, and he was probably just hanging there. I was just praying -- 'please God, give him life. Please help him.' That's all I could think of at that point. They worked so hard to try and help that baby.  They really did," Ceree Hall said.

FOX6 News did see family members leaving the scene with police on Tuesday -- but no one is being held in custody.

"Accidents happen, but it is definitely a tragedy. They was outside looking for him for over a half hour before they actually found him in the window sill," Barbara Gates said.

The investigation is ongoing.
