Changes coming to FoodShare program: Adults with no children will be required to work for benefits

MADISON (WITI) -- Major changes coming soon to Wisconsin's FoodShare program.Starting April 1st, FoodShare recipients ages 18 to 49 (who do not have any minor children) will be required to work for their benefits.The work requirement rules will affect members who have a renewal or apply for FoodShare benefits on and after April 1st, 2015.If you are an adult age 18 through 49, there are four ways you can meet your work requirement:

Need is "definitely significant:" Hunger Task Force's blue donation boxes out for the season

SHOREWOOD (WITI) -- While making her weekly trip to the grocery store, Carli Sanders put a couple extra items in her grocery cart after noticing the Hunger Task Force's blue donation boxes are back out for the season."I think it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside and I like teaching my son to do nice things for people in need," said Sanders.More than 30 Pick 'n Saves in southeastern Wisconsin received the donation boxes for its Food For Families program."Having to worry about whether you can have three meals with your family is not something that we're okay with.

"We're probably gonna feed about 30,000 people:" Palermo's teams up to donate 10,000 pizzas

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Palermo's Pizza gave away 10,000 pizzas to the Hunger Task Force today, September 27th.The event is part of a larger celebration of the Milwaukee company's 50th anniversary.Palermo's partnered with Roundy's today to make the event a success.Several big names attended, including Bucks player John Henson, and County Executive Chris Abele.Anyone could stop by to sample pizza, but the goal was charity.Organizers say it's offering a truly unique donation."It's going out, we're probably gonna feed about 30,000 people.

State Fair goers help fight hunger while getting a sweet deal on admission

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- Crowds of people poured into the Wisconsin State Fair on opening day, but many of them were bringing something extra."It makes you feel good especially because we have good jobs and we can afford everything and we like to help other people," said Judy Ingraham as she walked into the fair.They were bringing in food to get a sweet deal.

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- You can help FOX6, Johnson Controls and Summerfest“Stomp Out Hunger” in southeast Wisconsin.On the opening day of Summerfest, Wednesday June 25th, donate three (3) non-perishable food items between noon and 3 p.m. and you’ll receive one (1) free weekday admission ticket to get in to Summerfest free that day.Donations will be accepted at the Mid-Gate Promotions Booth as well as at the North Gate.

It'll be a happier Easter for 1,500 families in need

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- They're not quite the Easter bunny, but hundreds of volunteers gathered to fill baskets with food for families in need.If it wasn't for this extra help, Baby Ruth Joiner wouldn't have been able to serve an Easter meal to her family."You can`t even express how you feel, it`s such a wonderful thing," said Joiner.This is the 7th annual Easter Baskets for the Hungry program put on by Palermo's Pizza and the Hunger Task Force."There's everything in here for a family of 4 to feed them from their Easter meal on Sunday all the way through the week.

Hunger Task Force sees drop in demand during cold weather

WAUWATOSA (WITI) -- An area food pantry is seeing a significant drop in demand during the cold weather as frigid temperatures are keeping more and more people indoors.The Hunger Task Force says after a spike in November and December, winter is typically a slower time of the year for them.
