Wisconsin Army National Guard celebrates a "first"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Wisconsin Army National Guard is celebrating a first in its 164-year history. One of its medevac crews, which flew on Friday, February 1st, was made up entirely of female soldiers.

Captain Luelle Dooley Menet pilots the Blackhawk helicopter with that all-female team. She's retiring from the Wisconsin Army National Guard after more than a decade of service.

"I'm just excited to you know end my aviation career in this way," said Capt. Menet.

"It's great to be with these amazing pilots who have come so far. I feel like we've done a lot and to have us flying just one group of women just means a lot to me," said Cassandra Weiss.

Don't let their feminine physique fool you. When these ladies make the walk to their helicopter, they're all soldier.

"It will be hard I'm sure but maybe I'll rent a Robinson or something. Try to fly one of those little aircraft. Fly for the news channel or something," said Capt. Menet.

Friday's all-female flight out of West Bend wasn't the start of a permanent placement. It could be a long time until the next such crew is assembled.
