Up more than 120%: Bottled water on the verge of becoming the most consumed beverage
The Beverage Marketing Corporation says bottled water is on the verge of becoming the most consumed beverage in the United States.
Bottled water consumption rose more than 120 percent over 15 years -- from nearly 17 gallons per person in 2000 to nearly 37 gallons per person in 2015.
At the same time, other beverages dropped more than 16 percent.
That category included sodas, fruit beverages, energy drinks, sports drinks, ready-to-drink coffee and tea and milk.
The Beverage Marketing Corporation says the switch to bottled water means people saved between 24,000 and 27,000 calories over that period.
That's the equivalent of 161 hot dogs, 87 cheeseburgers or 126 chocolate donuts per person.
