Teen’s wish for Macy’s shopping spree is granted

WAUWATOSA -- The holidays, no doubt, are a time of happiness, joy and good cheer.  But for children battling a life-threatening disease, it may be hard to celebrate this time of year.

One teenager is smiling a little brighter Friday as his wish for a shopping spree was granted.

17-year-old Leon Koker rolled up to Macy’s at Mayfair Mall in a limo and was welcomed by the red carpet treatment.  Upon arrival, he was greeted with personal shoppers at his side.

“It really brings things back to perspective and it's so wonderful to be able to give back,” said Macy’s Store Manager Chris Katrichis.

Leon, from Kenosha, is living with Rhabdomyosarcoma - a rare cancer that attaches to soft tissue, like muscles.  For the last nine months, he has gone through treatment after treatment.

“Every week, we come up to Milwaukee and he goes.  Sometimes he stays in the hospital for a couple days,” said mother Ricarda Avila.

At Macy's on Friday, all of that was put aside for the entire day.  The retailer and Make-a-Wish Foundation partnered on National Believe Day to grant him a more than $5,000 shopping spree, buying shoes, clothes, electronics and anything else that came to mind.

“To bring moments of hope and strength and joy to their lives, especially during the holiday season, is truly an honor,” said Forrest Doolen from Make-a-Wish Wisconsin.

“I’m kinda nervous, kinda glad,” said Leon.

The young man of little words had his heart set on a few specific things.

“A camera and a game system,” he said.

Leon said he is thankful so many people helped make this possible.

“Everything I'm going through and stuff like that, they're basically supporting me,” said Leon.

“All that counts is to make him happy,” said Avila.

Two other Macy’s stores in Wisconsin also granted wishes Friday, one in Appleton and one in Madison.  Across the country, a total of 70 Macy’s stores are granting wishes too.
