Teen caught on camera leaping from police van while handcuffed captured after crashing stolen car

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police confirmed for FOX6 News on Tuesday, September 27th a teenager caught on camera escaping from a police patrol wagon has been taken into custody.

17-year-old Raymond Barfield was arrested in a stolen vehicle in the area of 23rd and Nash Street on Monday, September 26th, around 9:30 p.m.

The case will be presented to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the coming days.

The incident involving Barfield fleeing from a police van happened near 42nd and Silver Spring Drive. A woman in a vehicle traveling behind the police van watched as the back doors opened, revealing a prisoner inside. She then saw him jump out and take off running in broad daylight -- still handcuffed.

"The doors just opened and he was running down the street. The look on his face when he jumped out was kind of a shock -- like 'what do I do now?'" the witness, who did not want to be identified, told FOX6 News.

A criminal complaint says in December 2015, Barfield stole a car on Milwaukee's east side -- holding the driver at gunpoint. Police say Barfield and others took police on a chase in Glendale and Milwaukee. At that time, Barfield told police he fled because he had cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet for yet another crime.

Barfield was also accused of trying to steal from a Walgreens in Greenfield and an attempted purse snatching. While Barfield was arrested and charged, court records show there was a problem with a witness. The district attorney dismissed the charges and refiled them.

In the meantime, Barfield got out and did not show up for court in August. Police caught up with him again on September 11th and arrested him. He got away again -- this time by jumping and running.
