Snow makes unexpected appearance at St. Patrick's Day Parade

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A year ago, sunny skies and warm temperatures made for a pleasant St. Patrick's Day Parade experience in downtown Milwaukee. Saturday, rain came early but it was a surprise of snow that had people looking toward the sky.

Warmer temperatures melted packs of snow and ice. Chunks of it fell off ledges of the Shops of Grand Avenue overhanging the south side of Wisconsin Avenue. The snow and ice hit canopies on the way down, creating a loud boom and the pieces showered the crowd below.

"It was a weird noise," said Denise Ron, "It sounded like a drum beat and happened to look up and catch snowflakes in my eye so I'm hoping it holds out for the rest of the time."

"It sounds like gunfire going off sometimes because you hear a big boom and we've seen three or four of them come down in the last half hour and a couple people almost got hit but it's alright," said Rick Riley.

Fortunately, there no injuries were reported. Those along the street remained at their perch along the parade route. They say wacky weather is nothing new here this time of year.

"It's part of Wisconsin, right?" said Riley.
