"Sanctuary cities" bill, which prompted massive protests, won't be taken up by Senate

MADISON -- Tuesday, March 15th is the last day of the session for Wisconsin's Senate -- and a controversial bill that would outlaw so-called "sanctuary cities" isn't on the docket.

The bill would call for fines for cities that stop their police from questioning people about their immigration status when they're arrested for a crime.

It has prompted massive protests for weeks, including a demonstration Monday, March 14th.

"We saw employers close their shops down and close their factories down for the day so their immigrant and Latino workers could come to the Capitol to rally against this bill, because they too are worried about how it's going to affect their business and their economy," Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) said.

Meanwhile, the bill's co-author, Senator Steve Nass (R-Whitewater) says: "The decision to keep it off the calendar is a prime example of the adherence to political correctness practiced by some Republicans."
