Round table discussion: Milwaukee Police Department talks domestic violence

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A round table discussing domestic violence was held today, bringing people together who work with victims.

More than 70 people from the domestic violence field gather together.

The group included law enforcement, community services, and victims of domestic violence.

At the forum, members discussed the best ways to handle protecting people from domestic violence, and enforcing the laws in place.

Milwaukee police say the holidays add extra stress, which could lead to increased instances of violence.

"We recognize it's a stressful period in domestic situations, and last year with the cold weather, the agency and certainly district three saw a significant increase in domestic violence related aggravated assault," said Captain Jason Smith, with Milwaukee Police Department.

Milwaukee has had several domestic violence related homicides in the past few weeks. Part of Friday's discussion was about how, in those situations, someone could have stepped in to prevent the incidents from happening.
