Ready to bloom: Boerner Botanical Gardens opens for season
MILWAUKEE CO. (WITI) -- Monday was the first day of the season for the Boerner Botanical Gardens. The rain may have kept sales down on day one, but it was good news for the flowers.
Many of the tulips, roses and forsythia’s are a little behind this year because of the lack of warm and the fact that the snow just recently melted. The long and cold winter put the staff behind at first as well.
“The snow didn't melt until really the beginning April so it kept us from doing a little bit of our jobs out here getting the gardens ready, but we've been able to catch up,” said Shirley Walczak, the Botanical Gardens Director.
Now they are just waiting for spring to catch up, and encouraging visitors to come out and see the gardens.
“Come back often because the gardens change so much week to week, especially this time of the year but there’s always something- something new for you to see or discover out at the gardens,” said Walczak.
They have a busy season ahead of them, especially since the gardens are celebrating their 75th anniversary.
“With that 75th theme the staff has said it’s the diamond jubilee, and they've incorporated those diamonds into the landscape, into the flower beds this season,” explained Walczak.
There will also be sculptures placed in the gardens from a local artist, as well as special walking tours and events set up.
Monday also marked the opening of the gift shop and the Nells Cafe located inside the Education and Visitors center.
