Paraglider lands in freezing pond in Madison

MADISON — Authorities in southern Wisconsin are trying to figure out why a paraglider landed in a freezing rural pond.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office said the pilot inadvertently landed in the Town of Oregon pond on Friday evening and sank into the icy water. He managed to free himself from the aircraft but couldn't reach the shore.

A local resident called 911. Sheriff's deputies and Oregon police officers responded along with firefighters from Brooklyn, Oregon and Madison. The firefighters saved the pilot by wading out into the water in rescue suits. The pilot was treated on the shore for non-life threatening injuries, including cold water exposure.

The sheriff's office says the cause of the incident has yet to be determined.
