One girl killed, another in critical condition after crash

MILWAUKEE -- A 10-year-old girl was killed early Monday morning, and a five-year-old girl is in critical condition, after the car they were traveling in crashed into a parked semi truck. The female driver of the car is in custody.

Neighbors in the area described the tragic scene early Monday morning. Just before 2:00 a.m. Monday, a car carrying the two girls and the female driver crashed into the semi truck at the corner of 21st and Atkinson on Milwaukee's north side. "We heard a big boom, and it sounded like something hit something really hard. (The car) was smashed up so bad we couldn't see the kids. The 10-year-old seemed like she was pinned up inside the car. They had to cut the car down to get her out, both of them," one neighbor said.

Neighbors say they aren't sure how the female driver was able to survive after seeing the damage. "That was a tragic, tragic scene," a neighbor said.

The owner of the parked semi truck lives across the street from where the accident occurred, with his wife. FOX6's Bret Buganski spoke with the semi truck driver's wife Monday. She didn't want to be identified, but provided video she recorded after the crash. The video shows a four door car completely totaled on the rear driver side, and the roof torn off. "She had to be doing something, to take her eyes off of the road, because it seemed like she tried to turn off, but by the time she realized what was going on, she already smacked the truck," the semi truck driver's wife said Monday.

Neighbors in the area can only speculate on why the car crashed into the semi. All they have to go on is what they saw early Monday morning.

This crash remains under investigation. The Medical Examiner's Office Monday released the name of the 10-year-old girl killed in the crash. Her name is Brianna Johnson, of Milwaukee. No other names have yet been released.
