MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee home was damaged by fire on Wednesday morning, Feb. 25. It happened near 2nd and Auer shortly before 8 a.m.

The Milwaukee Fire Department tells FOX6 News the home was occupied and everyone self-evacuated.

The damage estimate is unknown but most likely not habitable, MFD says.

The cause is under investigation by MFD Fire Investigation Unit and MPD.

The fire tore through the home's first floor, and the smoke woke up Danita Graham, who helped save her family on the second floor. She said she saw flames coming from downstairs and had to make quick decisions.
"As I walk toward the back of the house, more smoke. My daughter was up, my son was up," Graham recalled. "Immediately, I’m just like ‘put clothes on, get out of the house.’"

In a state of panic, they bolted for the door. There was little time to save anything but each other.

"I just closed the kitchen door, got us some shoes and clothes and whatever I could," she said. "I don’t get to be scared when I have to protect my kids."

She said they made it outside before the firefighters arrived. But looking at the scene was when reality set in.
"The reality is I don’t have a home," Graham said. "Me and my children don’t have a home because they were karate kicking those windows out."
