MPD: Double homicide near 37th and Hadley

Milwaukee police said two men were shot and killed near 37th and Hadley in the city's Sherman Park neighborhood Friday night, June 18.

Two Milwaukee men were shot and killed in the city's Sherman Park neighborhood Friday night, June 17.

FOX6 News spoke with neighbors who say the recent gun violence makes them afraid to go outside at night. One woman said she would move out if she could.

"My little ones are outside, and they play out here almost every day," said Curtis Ashley. That is, if he can keep an eye on them.

Lately, Ashley said the violence has been too close for comfort. He wants to see his kids grow up safely in the neighborhood they call home.

"It always something, I'm telling them to get in the house, so we can check and see what's going," he said. "Just had tucked the little ones in, and I heard the shots."

"It's the young ones that are leaving us early these days sadly," said Ashley.

Vermita Brooks has lived in the neighborhood for 16 years. She never thought it would get like this.

"It's scary. You got to be inside the house before a certain time on this block because all you hear is gunshots," she said.

Brooks lives two doors down from where Friday's double homicide took place.

"To see them breakdown that way, it was terrible, to see her screaming that her child was laying in the street, I couldn't even imagine," said Brooks.

Both neighbors agree something needs to change before another life is taken away.

"The police really need to flood this neighborhood," Brooks said.

"I wish everyone (would) put the guns down. Let's try to enjoy the rest of the summer with little to no violence," said Ashley.
