Judge to decide if Elmbrook graduation ceremonies occur in church

BROOKFIELD -- It is an epic battle of church versus state, and the Elmbrook School District is fighting that battle.

Today, a federal appeals court panel will hear arguments in a key church and state case out of Brookfield. The Elmbrook School District in Brookfield has to defend its decision to hold graduation ceremonies inside a church.

The Americans United Lawsuit was filed on behalf of nine parents, students and graduates of the district, claiming they shouldn't be forced to attend a ceremony inside a church.

The 11-judge panel will decide whether it is constitutional for a public school to hold graduation ceremonies in the sanctuary of a church.
