"It's just so, so sad:" Loved ones remember brother & sister; two very young lives lost in fire

MILWAUKEE -- Coming together to say goodbye: Dozens gathered on Sunday evening, September 6th at the scene of a fatal fire in which two young children lost their lives. It happened early Friday, September 4th near Swan and Allyn in Milwaukee.

MaKayla and Marwaun Myles

11-year-old MaKayla and six-year-old Marwaun Myles were killed in the fire.

"I`m going to miss my kids," Marvin Myles, the children's father said.

A report from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office indicates the two children may have just been trying to help their mother.

The fire broke out just after 2:00 a.m. near Swan and Allyn on Milwaukee's northwest side.

MaKayla and her brother, Marwaun were not able to escape. After crews put out the flames, MaKayla was found in a second floor bedroom and Marwaun was in the same bedroom, hiding in a closet.

"MaKayla was very independent. She did whatever she wanted to do. (Marwaun) was like, the man of our household -- even though he was the baby," Phylicia Myles, a cousin of the victims said.

Investigators say the children's mother, Natasha Jones, woke up in the middle of the night to a crackling noise. She thought someone might have been trying to break into the house, but when she went down the stairs she saw fire.

Authorities say Natasha also saw six-year-old Marwaun in the kitchen, filling up a pot with water.

In the report, it states that Natasha took Marwaun outside and went back upstairs to get her two other children -- an infant and 11-year-old MaKayla. After walking back into the home, Natasha realized Marwaun had followed her.

Both Marwaun and MaKayla were then told to follow their mom, and the baby she was carrying, back outside -- but they didn't.

"Every day I come before I go to work and I walk them across the street to their bus stop," Marvin Myles said.

But now, Marvin Myles finds himself with a sad, new ritual -- standing and staring at the only thing that's left: The charred home near Swan and Allyn.

"I`m the kind of person, I want to see what took my kids' life. I want to see the cause of why my kids aren`t here," Marvin Myles said.

When the Milwaukee Fire Department arrived, the home was completely engulfed in flames.

According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, MaKayla and Marwaun did not suffer any other injuries other than thermal injuries related to the fire. Both of the children's deaths are being ruled an accident.

The fire department says it's still unclear whether the smoke detectors inside the home worked.
