Homicide in Waukesha: 40-year-old Kevin Hueman shot & killed

Hueman was shot and killed in Waukesha on Friday evening, August 14th. He was shot outside of his family’s home on E. North St. at Albert St. Officials say they used every resource available to identify a suspect in this case.

On Wednesday shortly after 5:00 p.m., the Waukesha Police Department Tactical Unit, the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department's K-9 Unit and Waukesha County Sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant about a block away from the original crime scene. That's where they believed the suspect would be.

After officers arrived on scene and secured a perimeter, numerous verbal attempts were made to gain the attention of the suspect inside the residence. It was later learned the suspect was inside the apartment, but refused to respond to the numerous verbal requests by officers. Less lethal rounds were deployed to gain the suspect’s attention, but were not fired at him.

The 35-year-old man was eventually seen in the apartment.  From outside of the apartment, officers could see the suspect harm himself using of an edged weapon. Moments later, officers were able to safely take the suspect into custody without harm to the officers or further harm to the suspect. He was taken to Froedtert Hospital for medical care.

Kevin Whitney lives in the neighborhood. In fact, he lives in the apartment building next door to where Hueman lived -- the apartment building where officials found the suspect in this case. He says he can't believe what's transpired there over the last month.

"I didn't really know what to think. It's a really sad thing," Whitney said.

Earlier in this investigation, police had said an athletic shoe was found at the scene -- and investigators believed it was left behind by the suspect.

As for the suspect now in custody, officials say "he's had many contacts with law enforcement."

Whitney says he could hear the commotion Wednesday evening as authorities closed in on the suspect.

"You could hear them upstairs yelling `get out of your apartment. You`re under arrest.' (There was) a loud 'boom.' I guess they set off some sort of a device or something at his door. It was kind of scary. It wasn't a real pleasant thing," Whitney said.

Officials do not have a motive for this fatal shooting at this time. Investigators still need to interview the suspect.
