"He just laying there dead...and they gone, ran off:" Suspects flee scene of fatal crash

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a fatal crash at 76th and Silver Spring late Friday, May 22nd.

Officials say around 10:30 p.m., a car making a left turn onto 76th St. from eastbound Silver Spring was struck by a northbound car traveling at a high rate of speed.

Two people were in that car that was struck. The sickening part of this story is that four people in the other vehicle didn't bother to stop or help.

Traffic speeds by as normal at 76th and Silver Spring on Saturday. Smashed up car parts on the side of the street and a teddy bear are the only things that testify to the tragedy that took place there less than a day before.

"It was a bad scene. I knew something bad had happened and the police had it all blocked off," said Dorothy Moffett, saw accident scene.

Dorothy Moffett and her husband were on their way home around midnight, when they encountered this scene.

"The car was in bad shape, it was turned, it was banged up," said Moffett.

Police say around 10:30 p.m. Friday night, the driver of a 2001 Audi station wagon may have run a red light before striking a 2006 Chevy Cobalt that was turning onto 76th Street.

The four men in the Audi fled the scene on foot.

The 25-year-old male passenger in the Cobalt died on scene from his injuries; the 26-year-old female driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

But those are just the impersonal facts of this crash. To understand its impact on this community, you need to walk a few blocks away from the scene.

"I don't go a day without seeing him. If we ain't on the phone, we facetiming," said Jaquan Williams, friend of the victim.

Jaquan Williams is now facing a lifetime of days without one of his best friends. A man he calls AD.

"I ain't want to believe it I kept calling his phone and he ain't pick up," said Williams.

FOX6 News found Williams and a crowd of others at an impromptu memorial for AD Saturday afternoon.

"He had love everywhere," said Williams.

Perhaps this loss is even harder to stomach, knowing that the people who caused it couldn't be bothered to stop and help.

"He just laying there dead, his girl begging for him to get up, he just dead. And they gone, ran off," said Williams.

UPDATE: On Tuesday, May 26th, police released the identity of the victim in this crash. He is 24-year-old Adrian McGaughy of Milwaukee. We are told they have a 25-year-old man in custody who they think may have been the driver. They're seeking at least one more known suspect from the striking vehicle.
