Hartland school bakes pumpkin pies, raises money for Christmas toys

University Lake School kindergarten through fourth-grade students were busy Tuesday baking up some pumpkin pies with ingredients donated by their families. The finished pies have been sold, with a total of nearly $1,000 raised, and that money will provide toys for families with children who might, otherwise, go without gifts this holiday season.

The 105 pumpkin pies were sold to members of the ULS community, neighbors, friends and family, and Tuesday was a huge baking day. Students said they loved baking the pies, and helping those less fortunate.

"They were very into making the pies, and they know where it's going. They know it's going to help somebody, because they know what they would feel like if they didn't have something underneath the Christmas tree," University Lake School Specialist Sue Manne said.

The University Lake School will also host their annual toy, mitten and hat drive scheduled to begin after Thanksgiving.
