Fire victims think about Brucker, a neighbor they didn't know

DELAFIELD (WITI) -- They lost everything in the fire in Delafield in which Sarah Brucker died. Now, they can't help but think of Brucker -- and be thankful everyone in their family is okay.

Ben Smith and Stephanie Neu lived in the building with their one-and-a-half year old son, Hunter. While everything they owned was destroyed, all they think about is Brucker -- who they admit they didn't know very well.

"I really haven't slept since I have nightmares every night just thinking about her and everything and just seeing it," said Neu. "Sad in all just knowing how nice of a person she was and the little bit of fun we had we'll always remember it."

Smith and Neu weren't there the night of the fire. Smith was visiting with a friend -- and Neu was preparing for a job interview outside her house. First, she had to take care of her son.

"Waited for him to fall asleep we left and if we wouldn't have left we would've been there and been asleep," said Neu.

While they begin to regain their possessions and look for a new place to live, they're trying to remain positive -- as difficult as it may be.

The couple did not have renter's insurance. However, their friends are holding a benefit for them at Spin in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward on Saturday, August 24th from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.
