DOT says sub-zero temps creating areas of black ice on freeway

MILWAUKEE (WITI) --  Blowing and drifting snow combined with the sub-zero air temperatures are creating areas of black ice on portions of the freeway system. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is advising motorists to reduce speeds. Conditions will remain that lead to the formation of black ice. These conditions are expected to remain for at least the next 24 hours.

Bridges, overpasses and ramps are all susceptible to the formation of black ice in addition to areas of the system that experience blowing and drifting of snow onto the roadway. Salting operations are less effective with the sub-zero air temperatures. It is possible that treated areas could still see the reformation of black ice.

WisDOT is asking motorists to remain vigilant and refrain from texting while driving and to avoid any activities that divert attention from the roadway.

If you are in an accident, remember to stay in your vehicle if appropriate and alert law enforcement of the incident.
