Daycare center accused of losing track of whereabouts of child

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee woman tried to pick up her six-year-old daughter from daycare on Monday, February 25th -- but she was nowhere to be found!

It is a parent's worst nightmare: not knowing where their child is! On Monday, February 25th, when a Milwaukee mom came to pick up her daughter from daycare, she never dreamed she'd learn her daughter was missing.

"Where is my child? That`s something a mother does not want to hear," Nakeal Ferrell said.

Fantastic Beginnings daycare on 43rd and Center says it forgot to pick Ferrell's six-year-old daughter up from school, even though it's literally right around the corner.

"We were just really busy. We were swamped yesterday, so it was just human mistake -- human error," Tabitha Boyd with Fantastic Beginnings said.

"You can`t make a mistake with other people`s kids when you`re a licensed daycare. You cannot do that," Ferrell said.

The school says the little girl waited for an hour-and-a-half before anyone came to get her, but at no point was the child ever alone. The school also says in the past, it has had problems with the daycare forgetting to pick up students.

State records from the Department of Children and Families show as recently as last fall, the daycare has gotten in trouble for failing to supervise children and keep track of them.

"We make sure all of our children are signed in and we make sure all of our children are signed out. Every hour. Nine times out of 10 we have not failed. We failed yesterday," Boyd said.

"You hear so much stuff about daycares already, so you put your all in your trust in somebody that`s gonna watch your child when your`e not there. It`s hard for us to trust people now with daycares, and then for you to do that? It broke my heart," Ferrell said.

Ferrell has pulled her daughter out of the daycare. She had only been going there for a few weeks. Fantastic Beginnings says the whole thing has been blown out of proportion, since the child was safe the entire time.
